I had an amazing week at the kite camp in Buen Hombre. Kiting conditions were great and it was really cool to be located right on the beach. Riin and Helen were great hosts. This place is so unique and away from the tourist crowds, which is what I was looking for. While I was not working remote on this trip, they did have wifi and it worked well in the common area. Breakfast and dinner were provided daily. Helen was able to set up round trip airport pickup from Santiago, which was helpful since it’s about a 2 hr drive each way. Look forward to coming back for another kite trip.

Spot paradisiaque pour le Kite, accès direct à la plage depuis le camp. Logement simple type ecolodge, douche extérieure (réservoir d’eau), repas convivial et copieux (breakfast/dinner) préparé quotidiennement par le restaurant à côté. Prévoyez une couverture car les nuits sont fraîches. Séjour agréable et reposant, prévoyez également un budget supplémentaire pour les services proposées sur place (downwind, excursions paradise island, boissons au bar etc). Riin est accueillante et répondra à vos demandes. Le spot est vraiment idéal pour apprendre le kitesurf.

Riin told me to come to Buen Hombre instead of Cabarete. I stayed for a week and didn't regret it. You can kite half the day in March and there is nearly no rain. The Cabanas are simple and the breakfast and dinner are from local products which you can't choose, but it tastes well. Maybe bring a torch or a power bank, since there is no electricity in the rooms, you can charge your phone in the main Cabana. There isn't much to do except for kiting and going on downwind trips and not any other options to eat out, but there is a local bar and a supermarket a few kilometres away. make sure to bring enough cash! don't leave food in your rooms, because a mouse might eat it, since it's all nature around the place. The boys from the kite school always have an eye on you and help you. you get to meet people while Breakfast and Dinner and chill out in the hamocks.

Decision to go to Riin’s place was spontaneous as we were traveling by car through Dominican. I had taken a few surfing lessons in the past so I thought it’d be fun to learn some kite basics as well. I let Riin know about our plans and that we were total beginners as she wanted to confirm our level “to be ready” when we come… We arrived to the camp two days later expecting “ready” staff (enough time to prepare right). Riin was not there, we were greeted by Serjio instead who showed us around. He told us to be ready for the lesson. A few minutes later we arrived to the beach curious to see what the prices are. To our great pleasant surprise Serjio told us that the lesson was included in the stay. And that we “should not worry about it”. “What a great welcome gift it must be” we thought, and proceeded with our intro lessons. The instructors were nice, we picked up the basics quite fast. Even though, our experience was marred by a gross accident one of the Kite students had right next to us leaving her unconscious for awhile. It was mentally difficult to continue the lesson but we did nevertheless. In the evening we met some nice people at the camp and hung out at a local bar run by a Cuban guy Jimmy. We had a legitimately cool time! Next morning, the whole stay was totally ruined for us… Riin sent us the prices list and the info book about the school. indeed, on the second day of our stay we finally got some intro info one should expect to receive at the time of booking. Additionally, we were requested to pay for whatever lesson hours we took yesterday. I was shocked.. I let her know that we were told it was free and not to worry about. What came later, was me being called ridiculous and naive for just telling the pure truth about what we’d been CLEARLY told. Riin was aware that we were total beginners, we had no clue about the prices (for the record, the prices in the school are fair, I don’t want to be called naive or something again). She proceeded calling me naive for hoping it would be free. Like SERIOUSLY?, We DID NOT hope neither assumed ANYTHING. We were simply following what the staff had told us. Now, obviously, had we known it was paid we’d have thought more carefully what we are purchasing. We would most likely get a package which come cheaper than individual lessons Riin was forcing us to pay for. We decided to leave immediately, we paid for the lessons we were tricked into taking (yes, that’s the right word). Riin agreed to give us a discount for the next night we are not staying but paid for (generous gesture ;) ) . What was interesting, is that Serjio later approached and apologized for misleading us. Good to have at least someone having decency to admit their bad. All in all, 1) Riin did not prepare for our stay even though promised to do so 2) intro materials were sent on the second day of our stay 3) we were called names (for telling the truth) 4) we were forced to pay for something promised to be free. As a final remark, if you are a good host, and just a decent human being, whenever you mistake , you admit it and take responsibility. You don’t blame the others and carry over the burden of your mistake to them.

Riin is the best Airbnb host in my 10 years here. The Airbnb itself has amazing ambiance - think waking up to the sound of birds chirping in the morning and read comfortably by the pool. Yup that’s what I did every morning. Cold plunge in the pool, read, relax. I got sick unfortunately and Riin helped me get literally a whole jug of coconut water freshly cracked locally. AND she cured my stomach with some folk remedy haha. This is also my third time in cabarete and I wanted to really know what’s good around here. Riin has all the local know how’s from food to things to do, and she also has a great kite surfing school. 100% will return with friends and she has the best dog lucky ever!
