The village "Rodia"
Ιn the most prominent position on the western side of Heraklion, dominates imposing a historical village of Crete, the village Rodia! This picturesque village located 18km northwest of Heraklion city is also called the "Balcony of Heraklion" because of the great sea views that it offers to its residents and visitors! It is very easy to walk around its streets and squares and there you can find all the basics during your stay at the villa such as mini market, bakery, gas station, pharmacy and lots of cafes "kafeneion, as the locals call it" and taverns!
In the village you can visit the Venetian villa! The Kallegis family of Byzantine origin, who had this house built in the 16th century must have been very wealthy! Alongside it stands a church dating from the same period, although we do now the exact origins of the church! You can’t look inside the villa, which has been fitted with new doors and window frames, but it’s interesting to see the adjacent church and various buildings around, including the ruins of an old ‘fabrica’, an olive oil factory, behind this important villa!
The old church of Panagia of Rogdia sits beside a newer chapel with a date of 1809 inscribed above the door! You can see an ecclesiastical arched doorway and the remnants of a church contemporary to the villa leading to a courtyard, in which many traces of the past remain!
Beaches near the Villa
Pantanassa
This beautiful beach with pebbles and clear sea is located next to the port of Pantanassa!The beach is organized with umbrellas and sunbeds and there are some trees around, hanging from the surrounding cliffs! Access is very easy, since there is a path from the port! If you get hungry, there are taverns in the port of Pantanassa and the surrounding area with fresh fish!
Paleokastro
Its name means "The old castle" and it takes the name from an imposing Venetian fort, almost a castle, facing the sea, an obstacle to the pirates who terrorized these shores during the middle-ages. The castle is located on the top of an enormous rock next to the beach! This small, picturesque beach with pebbles remains sheltered even in very strong winds! The beach is not an organized one and is ideal for relaxing moments!
Helidoni
It is believed that all the picturesque beaches of Crete are located away from the major urban centers, in very remote areas only! Of course this is a myth for those that are well aware of the well hidden heavens in Crete! One of these small paradises is Helidoni (Swallow) beach which is located a few meters south of the historical fort Paliokastro by Rogdia near Heraklion! It is a tiny beach with fine pebbles and sand in some places! The sea bottom is quite rocky being ideal for snorkeling!
Lygaria
The beach is very beautiful with coarse sand and turquoise calm waters, while the small boats create a magic scenery! It is very well organized with umbrellas, sunbeds, water sports, a diving school, beach bars and restaurants!
Agia Pelagia bays
This small picturesque village has been transformed into a very popular tourist resort with many hotels, restaurants, cafes, and bars! The main beach of the settlement is a long and narrow beach with sand and greenish waters! The water is almost always calm here and the bay forms a tranquil harbor! The beach offers many options for water sports, diving, umbrellas and food!

Spiliotissa Gorge
West of the village Rogdia there is a small gorge called Spiliotissa that descends to a 10m high waterfall ("Rechtra"), reached via a quite steep descend with ropes! Descending the gorge, we come by some small waterfalls, the cavernous chapel of Panagia Spiliotissa, and reach the beach of Paliokastro! What causes a great impression is that in the middle of the gorge, there is a cave that has been transformed into a workshop for painting Christian icons by an agiographer, right in the middle of nowhere!
Savvathiana Monastery
The monastery is one of the several monasteries that operated in the area during the Venetian period, which was later mercilessly destroyed by the Turks! Savvathiana monastery is built on a naturally fortified position, possibly in order to protect the monks from the constant pirate raids before the Venetian period! Very near the monastery, just 200m, you can visit the cavernous church of St. Anthony, which probably once operated as a separate monastery!
