Hekla: In front of our house to the east you see a great and beautiful mountain range and there to the left you can see the famous volcano mountain Hekla which is one of Icelands most active volcano. Over 20 eruptions have occurred in and around the volcano sunce 874. During the middle ages Europeans called the volcano the "Gateway to Hell"
Hekla center: In Hotel Leirubakki about 4 km further up road 26 you can find "The Hekla center" which is á small multimedia exhibition of Mount Hekla, its history and its influence on human life in Iceland through the ages.
Þjófafoss waterfall: If you however drive 17 km up (north) road 26 (13 km from Leirubakki), turn left and drive 4 km more you will find Þjófafoss waterfall. According to folklore and history, the waterfall got its name from practice in the old judiciary system in Iceland, as thieves were thrown into the waterfall to finish their sentence. Almost without exception, none have ever been seen again. The waterfall is south of the beautiful mountain Búrfell which is the beautiful mountain you see from the kitchen and dining room windows.
Hellnahellir: About 4 km in the other direction from the house, that is back down road 26, you can find on the right side the farm Hellar and there is Hellnahellir which is Icelands biggest man made cave about 50 meters long. For further information look for "Hellnahellir" at the web.
It is ideal to drive from our house and see many other beautiful and famous places. To the west are places such as waterfall Gullfoss, the famous Geysir and the Secret Lagoon. To the east you can visit Seljalandsfoss, Seljalandslaug, Skógarfoss, Skógar and Reynisfjara. I recommend that you browse those places and their locations on the internet.
Hella. Hella is the nearest town about 35 km from the house. Drive road 26 south to Ring road 1, turn left (east) and drive about 8 km. Hella is a small town but there you will find, swimming pool, grocery store, liquor store, gas station, bank and restaurants.
Swimming pools: The nearest swimming pool is in Laugaland 21 km drive south (down) road 26. In April and May its only open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 18.00 to 21.00. From June its open all weekdays from 14.00 to 21.30 and Saturdays and Sundays from 10.00 to 19.00.
The swimming pool in Hella has more opening hours. Its open Monday to Friday from 06.30 to 21.00 all year round. On weekends from 12.00 to 18.00 but from 25. of May from 10.00 to 19.00.
Horseback riding:
If you are interested in going horseback riding we recommend á horse breeding farm called Skeiðvellir which is in about 15 min driving south or back “down” road 26 were you came from. They have horses that suit everyone. For those who don´t want to ride but do want to interact with and get to know more about the Icelandic horse, they offer a guided tour of the stable with and for a small fee, they offer a little horse rental for children, where they can try sitting on a horse and riding it as a guide leads them around.
