Briones will be your PERFECT STARTING POINT to visit our region (La Rioja). It will only take you one hour by car to get to:
-Bilbao (Guggenheim Museum, awesome building by F, Gehry).
-Pamplona (San Fermines, the most famous runnig bulls in the world).
-Burgos (Atapuerca, amazing paleontological site, the dawn of mankind, Evolution Museum).
-Half an hour from Logroño and Vitoria. Three hours from Madrid.
-Only 10 minutes to get to Haro, the biggest concentration of really fine hundred-year-old wineries in the world (Muga, López Heredia. Bilbainas, CVNE.....)
Briones is an ancient medieval walled village, we keep two of the main gates in the wall and some remains of the keep from the castle (you can get to the top of it and enjoy fantastic views). Built close to the river Ebro at the top of a natural hill. Nice views over the river at the north of the village. Cobble stone square and main streets (it just takes you to the past), plenty of stone made big noble houses with their shields on the facades. Monumental, huge church with a gorgeous baroque organ.
Lively life in the village and mainly in the main square.
It is worth to mention the fantastic "JORNADAS MEDIEVALES", a recreational medieval festival wich involves all the village and takes place on the third weekend of June, you have to enjoy it. (URL HIDDEN)
Ideal destination if you love WINE WORLD. La Rioja is famous around the world by its fine wines and Briones is located in the very heart of the wine production area ;-).
You could visit:
-Local wineries.
-The great, awesome MUSEO DE LA CULTURA DEL VINO, DINASTÍA VIVANCO. Perhaps the biggest and accomplished in the world.
-Haro and its hundred-years-old really fine wineries, the biggest concentration of hundred-year-old wineries in the world (Muga, López Heredia. Bilbainas, CVNE.....). Also "La herradura", the area where to have nice tapas.
-Also you could pay a visit to San Vicente de la Sonsierra (very famous Easter religious celebration as well), Logroño..............
Do you love wine and MODERN ARCHITECTURE? Great, you are in the right place, let's see:
-Bilbao, Guggenheim Museum. I know this is not about wine, but the building by Frank Gehry is just astonishing. Bilbao is a fantastic place to try some impresive food too.
-Elciego (21 Km from Briones), Marques de Riscal winery and hotel, F. Gehry again here.
-Laguardia (21 km), Ysios winery by Calatrava.
Just CULTURE:
Did you know spanish language was born here in La Rioja. You can visit the two monasteries (Yuso and Suso monasteries) in SAN MILLÁN DE LA COGOLLA (30 km), where our language was born. I've been told monks have a restaurant where you can delightin trying our delicious "caparrones", a typical receipt made of native beans........., no words......amazing!
You also could drop yourself by Cañas and Casalarreina monasteries.
It is worth to visit too:
EZCARAY (40km), maybe the most beautiful village in La Rioja next to Briones. Its ancient and fine handcrafted blankets factory, really nice, beautiful, soft, warm ones, I love them. Its views, its restaurants (Echaurren, maybe one of the best in the area). And of course its skying facilities during winter.
LOGROÑO (35km), our capital. "Calle Laurel" where to have some nice "pinchos", wineries.........
Don't forget our GASTRONOMY, delicious food in our restaurants, bars, shops or just try our "chuletillas al sarmiento" in a tradicional "bodega"......delicious and REAL!!! (little lamb chops roasted using the branch of our vines).

Briones es un encantador pueblo medieval empedrado, en su día amurallado (se conservan dos de las puertas de entrada a la villa), con gran patrimonio histórico (Paz de Briones: Navarra - Castilla 1379), multitud de casas de sillería blasonadas, monumental iglesia con un precioso órgano barroco…… Situado en lo alto de un promontorio a orillas del Ebro con grandes vistas. Briones is small (roughly 900 people population), so you can get anywhere on foot. A bike would be nice too, but remember it was built at the top of a hill................
A coach and train service is avalaible and conect the village with the surroundings (Haro, Logroño, Miranda de Ebro.....).
By car you can get anywhere, both by road or highway.
Tratándose de un pueblo pequeño, se puede ir a todos los sitios a pie, la bici es una buena opción también.
Hay servicio de autobuses para moverse por la zona.
Conexión por carretera, tren y autopista con los principales núcleos urbanos del entorno: Haro, Miranda de Ebro, Logroño, Vitoria, Bilbao, Pamplona, Burgos......
