Oradour sur Vayres is a wealth post war history for instance: The ‘Oradour-sur-Glane’ massacre was a direct effect of erroneous intelligence informing that a German SS officer was being held but actually he was held in the town of Oradour sur Vayres. The ‘Village Martire’ has been left as it was after the massacre of civilians as a reminder of our past and thing we must not return too. The Village is free to visit and walk around and is only 35 km away.
Like many areas of France we are networked with numerous interconnecting chemins (paths) leading to some very pretty places only found by being adventurous on foot or offroad vehicle.

Places to Visit:
Oradour Sur Glane (from free)
The SS Panzer Das Reich, destroyed the village of Oradour-sur-Glane during WWII and today it is preserved fairly close to how it was on Saturday 10th June 1944 in remembrance of all those who were massacred. Free to walk around the site and museum, there is a nominal charge for the visitor centre.
Montrol-Senard (free)
Montrol-Senard is a quaint little village in the Limousin. The buildings depict traditional life of a Limousin village of the French yesteryear. Just a couple of kilometers south from Mortemart, the only village classed among the "most beautiful villages in France" in Haute-Vienne and yes Mortemart is also well worth a visit. It is possible to visit all three places from our BnB by motorbike or car in a day and fit in a lunchtime Chinese in Saint Junien for 10.90e per head.
Brantome Canoe
If you like canoeing or just want to give it a go then Brantome Canoe (55 mins) is the place to go. In the town, there are many small shops, bars and restaurants as well as the Abbey, Caves ETC. Brantome is beautiful and well worth a visit. Intertwined with the river and intersected by weirs and perfect for the canoeing fun but be warned it is not unusual to get wet!!! If you hire your canoe (two hire companies) from Brantome you can either just paddle for an hour around the island and venturing some mild wiers or venture downstream. Don’t worry the hirer will bring you back to your car.
