We had a great experience. The house has amazing views. Wonderful to be part of Nossa Senhora das Dores celebration. Wonderful community. We fell in love with Pico and Baía de canas in particular and Look forward to being part of the community.
The location, the view and the outdoor area is amazing. We can not say the same about the inside, it is dark and the walls get a strong mold smell when it rains, we doubt they can do anything about it. The hot water is a typical Portuguese gas heater, with low pressure and showering, you have to open a tap a little to keep the heater on. The 4 upstairs metal beds are short and bendy, all madrassas are old and worn out, probably the heavy sofa beds with a thin foam madras are the best option. Maria was friendly when writing, we never met her. Tip: Following the map link to the location, go right, it is before the actual marked position on the left side of the road. The kitchen is very well stocked, obviously used privately and not only for rental, some items in the cupboard had a bit of mold on them, we washed everything by hand before using it. There is no dishwasher in the house, even thou listed. There was a dolce gusto and filter drip coffee macine. Good wifi. Few sockets.
The house is a great, private getaway with beautiful views of the sea and Sao Jorge island across the straight. It's perched on the side of a steep hill, and it's possible to swim at the bottom. We opted to go to the natural piscinas around the island, as the swimming area is a little harder to access near the house. Stores, restaurants, and other services are within a 20 minute drive. There is wifi and satellite television in the living room, and a clothes washing machine in the shed out back. Communication with Maria was excellent, the house is very well stocked, and we were greeted by Maria with homemade jam, local butter and bread, as well tea and coffee. We had a little bit of trouble locating the house as the exact location was not provided in the booking, but found it eventually. It is a truly rustic vacation home. The house is a traditional stone house made from the local volcanic rock that is everywhere on the island. We were there at the end of July, and it can get quite warm in the house even with the windows open. The furniture is older, and the bed in the main bedroom (full/double?) was not quite big enough for these two adults to sleep comfortably. I ended up sleeping in one of the upstairs beds, which are shorter than a standard bed. At night while we were there, the local birds would make a somewhat hilarious mating call pretty much all night, from dusk until dawn. We were not bothered by this, but if you're a light sleeper or require silence this may bother you. There are also lizards all over the place, and they will get into any food that is left out. We put everything in the refrigerator to prevent this. Overall we enjoyed our stay, and it was a great base from which to explore the island of Pico.
Let's start with the pros: -Maria is a thoughtfull person and a kind host. You can tell she is proud of her Island and runs her Air Bnb like a family house. She greeted us warmly and brought us cheese and a typical azorean desert with we really appreciated. - The view from the house on the ocean is simply stunning. On clear days you can see Sao Jorge and the Western part of Pico. The dining area face the oceans so you always have a georgeous view when eating at the house. Now the cons. I'm sorry I have to write cons but some elements have to be brought up to future travellers: - Cleanliness: the house wasn't dirty per say (you could tell the floor and bathroom had been cleaned), but it wasn't exactly clean either. Expect extensive spider webs all around the house, dust in corners and even broken glass in bedrooms (which I unfortunately hurt myself with). We felt that a professional and thorough cleaning was well overdue. - Bugs and etc: the doors don't fully close and since the house is not equipped with air conditioning, you have to leave the windows opened if you want some fresh air. The result is you'll find all types of bugs inside, the most noticeable being small lizards. We didn't mind them too much, but some people might, especially when they are stuck in the sink. -Air conditioning: as mentioned above, the house is not equipped with air conditioning and the azorean sun hits the house directly. The result is that even with the windows and doors opened, the house is very hot and humid. This greatly impacted the quality of our sleep. Hot water: We notified Maria that the water temperature in the shower was inconsistent, going from cold to boiling hot even if we didn't touch the handle. Even thought she did send someone over to try to fix the issue (without success), we found it hard to believe when she said it was the first time someone raised the issue. At 250 Canadian dollars per night, we expected consistent water temperature in the shower. - functionality of the kitchen: the reason why we rent houses is to be able to cook food instead of always eating out. While the house is well equipped, it is so cluttered with stuff that we found it hard sometimes to find what we were looking for in the drawers or cabinets. Also, there is virtually no counter to prepare food or when doing the dishes. - location: even if the view from the house is fantastic, one has to acknowledge remoteness. Pretty much any activity will take you about 30min to get to. -Birds: As I said, since the house doesn't have air conditioning, you have to leave the windows opened. However, during our stay in July, apparently a rare nocturnal specie of bird was nesting in the area. Their call is incredibly loud and lasts well into the night (think someone screaming just outside your window). Maria was well aware of that element and didn't bring it up until we arrived at the house. We felt that she could have made us aware before to give us the opportunity to buy earplugs. General impression: while we had a good time at Maria's, our group didn't feel the accommodation justified the price we paid. We have stayed at many air bnb on many islands in the Azores and this one was by far the most expensive and the one with offered the least. The view and the friendliness of the host simply don't justify the price we paid.
自我介绍
We are a couple born and raised in Pico in the sixties. The world was busy even back then. Woodstock, Vietnam, the Cold War... but in Pico the time stops and all the world problems go away. Martin Luther King had a dream, but in Pico everyone is living the dream. We met at the eighties. Walls were falling and the future was looking promising. Queen and Mikael Jackson were on the radio and while Madonna was playing like a virgin, we were busy planning two kids. The world go on and on but the simple things are the things that matter if you live in Pico. Fishing and diving in the sea, farming and bee keeping, or even a quiet afternoon with your favorite book and glass of wine can both fill your day and your soul. Have dinner with your friends and family and enjoy the simple life. That is why we planned to build our vacation house in this quiet place. It was home for many good moments with the ones we care most and now we feel it is time to share this place with you. Our house is your house. Sincerely Manuel and Maria
