Offering total privacy, the three levels of living space are built around an astonishing natural rock outcrop and topped by a roof deck which takes full advantage of both the seclusion and drama of the acreage. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame views of your own meadow, rocky ridges and even a small pond. located just minutes from New Massive hemlock beams, reclaimed from the property, cap each room, including the sun-drenched bedroom retreat that sits atop the building like a secret tree house. Custom ceramic art and tile mosaics - designed and fired on site - are found throughout the home, give the house a masterfully mixed sense of playfulness, warmth and modernity. The radiant heated floors provide comfortable warmth and an incredible European Tulikivi wood burning fireplace with soapstone oven can be used for cooking delicious pizzas! The house was the brainchild of renowned ceramicists Phillip Maberry and Scott Walker. Completed in 1995, and lauded as a "thrill ride on the color wheel" by the New York Times, the colorful Mayberry & Walker aesthetic combines with a design inspired by nearby Manitoga, an significant architectural home designed by Russell Wright. The property also has a fascinating pop cultural history as the site of the award winning “Love Shack,” music video, of B52s fame. The current house overlooks the former site of the original Love Shack cabin, used as the location for filming in 1989. A handmade ceramic plaque survives to commemorate the history - and we’ve found the great energy of those times also remains! It all combines for a relaxed but visually stellar experience, inside and out, in the heart of the Hudson River Valley.
This house had interesting and creative touches throughout the space. It has a lot historical significance and is a creative’s dream house. It has lots of sunlight and was an awesome getaway from the city. Our check in was easy and the hosts were responsive to us and checked in on us during our stay. Highly recommend! Would love to come back!
We loved our stay in Highland. The home was as described and provided the remote retreat we were seeking.
This place gives inspiration to the creative. A total feast for the eyes and food for the soul.
The house was quirky and a riot of color. The soaring glass facade provided an airy sensation and it felt as though we were living in the trees. There was something interesting at every turn in the house and, it was just fun staying there. The kitchen was well accessorized and the pantry was exceptionally stocked. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The only drawback was that our emails and attempt at phone communication went unanswered which may have been a glitch but was nonetheless frustrating.
Amazing house & surroundings. 360-degree views of nature, the place feels in the heart of the forest yet very close to Poughkeepsie and New Paltz (a hip little town with lots of great coffee places, restaurants and attractions). We absolutely loved our two-week stay, wish we could have been there for longer. Definitely wishing to return soon for another break from the big city life.
