Fenton’s Farmhouse your own holiday in history in the Irish countryside In the 1840s some woodland at Knockalisheen was cleared and a cottage built there by workers if the Earl of Shradbroke. The Cottage was used by his agent Abraham Coates as an office of which the House, Office, Stable, car house, dispensary shows in the Griffith Valuation record in the 1840s. Bartholomew and Mary Fenton ( Nee Kennedy ) came from the Soup kitchens during the famine and got married on the 14th February 1847, and came to live in the cottage with 26 acres to farm, gamekeepers of the Turrapacha wood and the Nire river. The Fenton’s lived and farmed there throughout the years until the passing of John in 1990, Tommy in 2001 and Kathleen (Nee Condon) in 2016. The farmhouse, barn (now bedrooms), stable and carhouse became a protected structure after the year 2000. Restoration of the farmhouse began in 2008 with the roof, walls, and windows of the main buildings first completed. In 2017 the bedrooms were built in the barn to include bathrooms and utility room and roofed with slate. The flagstone and cobble path at the front was painstakingly sourced in order to keep with the original cobbled at the end of the courtyard. Original features include the washstand in the bathroom, the Kitchen table, Dairy stool fireplace, pots and pans and some plates have all been restored in order to preserve as many of the original features as possible.
