Terri was a great host. She was really patient and understanding with me as I attempted to juggle organizing the stay with the person I look after, their team of staff and the management of the organization who provide the support for the person. It took some time so for her to hold on to the dates for us was a great help. The house was great too. Out in a nice quiet rural area that was peaceful and the house had everything we needed. Was nice, tidy and comfortable to stay in.
Lovely comfortable house in a small village (quieter than usual due to covid). Perfect for a family getaway to explore this gorgeous area. The house was pristine and everything was provided that would be needed for self catering (including toys for the kids). We had a very warm and friendly welcome and farewell from Terrie and her daughter Alicie. They were the perfect hosts. There was lots of information provided about what to do. We did the greenway, Lismore (lovely Sunday market), two open farms (Ardmore and Leahy’s) and Colligan woods. And we had some lovely pub meals in Dungarvan (The Moorings and Merrys). We could easily have filled another week. Would definitely recommend Terrie’s home away from home.
Great place to use as a base to visit the local area (Waterford, Clonmel, Dungarvan). The house is well kept and has all the amenities a family could need for a short visit, including plenty of toys for children and games for adults, a bbq, outdoor furniture, etc. Terrie was a great host, communication was fantastic. The location is Touraneena, which has one pub (closed at the time of our stay) and no other shops or amenities. You will need to do your shopping in Dungarvan, a 20 minute drive away.
Situated just 1 km off the main Dungarvan/Clonmel road, Touraneena is ideally located to enjoy the bustling atmosphere of Dungarvan's shops, The Waterford Greenway for cycling and walking, Clonea Beach, fabulous restaurants, great golf courses or perhaps take a stroll along the fabulous Nire Valley lakes or visit the tranquil heritage town of Lismore and Lismore Castle & Gardens where you can also enjoy a spot of fishing. If you would like to travel a little further afield, you can visit Clonmel for great shopping, Cahir Castle or the Swiss Cottage in Cahir. Fota Wildlife Park, Carrigtwohill, County Cork is only an hours drive away.
The area of Sliabh gCua (Touraneena) nestling in the valley between the Comeragh and Knockmealdowns mountain ranges, was famous in the mid-18th century for its poetry court, or cuirt filiochta. A leading light in these was the almost legendary figure of Donncha Rua Mac Namara (1715-1810).
Later the spirit and excitement of these gatherings was brought into modern times through the work of a whole series of notable Gaelic scholars.
There was Donal O Fearachair (1852-1929), Padraig O Mileadha (1877-1947) and Padraig O Fiannusa (1914-1990). Moreover, Padraig O Cadhla (18751948), in helping to found Ring College, played a major part in ensuring that Deise Irish is alive and being spoken today (Sliabh gCua) was an Irish-speaking area until the late 19th century.
Hospitality is the hallmark of this special area, as the late Ciaran Mac Mathuna recalled on his Sunday morning RTE Radio programme, there is an ancient saying: "Tooraneena, mar a liontar an ghloine" (Tooraneena, where they fill the glass).
Just 3km up the road are the ruins of the medieval Knockboy Church containing 6 Ogham Stones.
