We booked a last minute break. Family of 4 (kids aged 7 and 9) and 2 dogs. The accommodation was amazing and the pictures do not do it justice, the views are picturesque. We used the cottage as our base and set off for walks daily from the house. There is a river that runs alongside the property and the kids spent hours exploring. The house is remote and the nearest village is Hawes where there is a Spar shop and local shops, pubs, Ice cream and fish and chips. There is no phone signal however the WI-FI was great. The owners live next to the accommodation which I found comforting with it being remote. They are really friendly. We will be definitely back.
Just WOW! We travelled with our 11 months old son, husband, mom and dog. We loved our 7 days stay in the farmhouse. It’s truly a luxury to be so remote so there is no phone signal, but yet a short drive to the closest towns for food and other things you’d need. We ordered grocery for the week and Helen was really kind putting them away for us, ahead of our arrival. There was a travel cot and a high chair provided for us so we don’t have to bring all that over. My favorite part of the stay is morning and evening dog walks, the skies in the valley changes all the time and it’s such a joy to see the little differences everyday. We are already thinking about returning next year!!
We had such a great time here. The valley was peaceful and magical, far away from people, cars and anything else that normally gets in the way of a beautiful view and the sounds of nature. Malcom and Helen and their family were perfect hosts, friendly and helpful. Malcolm spent a lot of time wood carving with our daughter which she loved and we all loved walking and exploring nearby streams and waterfalls amongst the abundance of picturesque villages and rolling hills and countryside. We now want to move to Yorkshire!
A really special getaway in the middle of the Dales! Accommodation: Honestly I don’t think the pictures do the place justice. Very spacious, very comfortable and very homey. Really felt like a family home - small touches from the fresh farm eggs left for us to the telescope for birdwatching/stargazing really went a long way. Super soft sheets, baths and the wood burning stove were greatly received too! Location: Idillic - the actual farm was amazing and enormous! Gorgeous setting (which can be seen from every window in the place) and plenty of walks that can be done around/starting from the property. Walking along the stream and birdwatching was a particular favourite! You really felt secluded when here. Very quiet and out of the way, which was exactly what we were looking for and incredibly peaceful. This being said, the local town (Hawes) was only 15 mins down road and a whole load of fantastic walks, pubs, shops were very accessible too. Hosts: Very hospitable and knowledgable. They were there to give us great recommendations for the best walks, trails and pubs (and even point out the odd woodpecker!). They left us to our own devices but were also available for help at any time. Overall - Tranquil and beautiful location, fantastic accommodation and super friendly hosts. Would highly recommend for a relaxing getaway!
Hay Mew is part of a converted traditional stone barn on the edge of Oughtershaw, a small hamlet just south of the market town of Hawes. We have 1 other cottage here too, together sleeping 8 people, perfect for family gatherings.
Situated on the Dales Way and set in the heart of our sustainable wildlife and conservation project at Nethergill Farm, rolling countryside can be seen from all aspects of the cottage
On the farm, we have a whole range of activities:
* Meet our chickens and collect eggs for breakfast.
* Nature and bird watching from our 2 observation hides.
* Fly fishing in Oughtershaw Beck, which meanders in front of the farmhouse.
* Walk the Dales Way from your doorstep.
* Stargazing - we are a Dark Sky Friendly Business situated in the Yorkshire Dales Dark Sky Reserve and can provide equipment and advice on how to best see the sky at night.
There are lots of public footpaths from your doorstep with the Dales Way running straight past your window. A car is necessary to get the most out of your stay, especially if you would like to visit local attractions, such as the market town of Hawes only 15 minutes drive away, home to the Wensleydale Creamery; Grassington with its cobbled streets and independent shops 25 minutes drive away; Skipton with its castle and cobbled streets 45 minutes drive away. Hardraw Falls is about 20 minutes drive away and Aysgarth Falls is about 30 minutes drive away.
