We absolutely loved our stay at this beautiful cottage. The cottage is cosy and much bigger than expected, fully equipped with everything needed for a lovely holiday. The location was perfect and a short drive to amazing things to see and do. We loved Glencar lake and waterfall, Gleniff horseshoe drive, fabulous beaches and our daughter enjoyed the soft play and playground in Grange. Marie was so responsive and helpful with wonderful communication throughout, and left us a fabulous welcome package. Thank you so much and we would love to come back!
Lovely wee cottage , close to beautiful beach and walking distance to local pub/restaurant. Enclosed garden was great for young kids. Lovely welcome pack with wine and crisps and breakfast food 😊 would stay again
There is much to see and do in the North Sligo area, with a hauntingly beautiful landscape dominated by the Dartry mountain range. There are many magnificent beaches nearby. Tralua beach is directly across from the cottage and accessed through a gate and laneway at the sharp bend on the road up to Cliffoney Village. It’s a beautiful beach to walk, full of birdlife and overlooked to the right by Classiebawn Castle. It is not safe for swimming with very dangerous currents so for your safety please do not swim there. It is popular with experienced surfers who know the location. Mullaghmore beach is 5 minutes’ drive away and is safe for swimming and snorkelling. Streedagh beach where three ships from the Spanish Armada foundered in 1588, and more recently used in the production of the popular series Normal People is a short drive away and accessed from Grange village.
Sligo is known as the surfing capital of the west, so for the more adventurous there are excellent surfing schools in Strandhill and Bundoran. Mullaghmore attracts many international surfers and can produce some spectacular waves when conditions are right. Easkey, Strandhill and Bundoran also produce excellent surfing and body boarding conditions.
There are many cultural attractions located in the Yeats County. Lissadell House, former home of the Gore-Booth family and Constance Markiewicz, is a short drive away, and is signposted from Drumcliff Village. Yeats official grave is in Drumcliff Church cemetery, which also boasts the remains of a round tower. The Yeats Building in Sligo Town hosts the world-famous summer school and has lots of useful information on William Butler Yeats and his brother Jack.
North Sligo is a place of outstanding natural beauty. Ben Bulben and Ben Wiskin are both within easy reach, as is the Gleniff Horseshoe and the remains of the old Barytes mine (this can be accessed via Cliffoney Village). Glencar Lake in neighbouring County Leitrim is also worth seeing, and best viewed from the Manorhamilton road.
A drive or walk around Mullaghmore Head is highly recommended.
Sligo is also home to many ancient burial sites. The cairn visible on the top of Knocknarea is reputed to be the burial site of the legendary fighting Queen Maeve. There is a fine example of a court cairn at Creevykeel on the road between Cliffoney and Bundoran. The Carrowmore complex
is home to the largest and oldest Neolithic stone circles and dolmens in Ireland.
A car will help you make the most of your visit. Cliffoney Village is within easy walking distance, and there is a regular bus service from there to local towns. Local taxis are also available - details are provided on the cottage notice board.
Shopping
There is an excellent Supervalu in Grange village which is well stocked and reasonably priced. Sligo town has all the main multiples with Tesco, Dunnes, Lidl, Aldi and various Centra and Londis stores. It is a good shopping town with a range of boutiques and a large Penneys located in the centre.
Restaurants
There are some excellent restaurants locally. Harrisons in Cliffoney is within walking distance, the food is excellent and reasonably priced. If you like seafood then a visit to Eithne’s by the sea in Mullaghmore is highly recommended. One of the finest dining experiences in the area is in Eala Bhan, located by the Garravogue River in Sligo town. Langs in Grange provide a range of reasonably priced tasty food, as does Davis’s Yeats Tavern in Drumcliff.
The Tea House and Coffee Shop at Drumcliff Church yard is also worth a visit.
Horse-riding
Island View Riding stables is situated only minutes away, on the right hand side of the road as you head towards Grange village. It caters for both beginners and experienced riders. Enjoy spectacular rides on nearby deserted beaches, including our own Tralua Strand, or embark on a tranquil hack over the local hills and trails where the views are breath-taking.
Angling
Deep sea angling in the Atlantic Ocean for many species as well as freshwater game (trout and salmon) and coarse fishing are available locally. Enquire at the pier in Mullaghmore.
Water sport.
From swimming in the sea (under lifeguard supervision of course!), deep sea diving, deep sea angling activities in this area are never far from the water!
There are excellent surfing conditions and facilities at Bundoran, Mullaghmore and Strandhill Village (which is also home to a world famous surfing school).
A boat ride from Mullaghmore to the offshore monastic island of Inishmurray is a good trip, as is a boat ride on the nearby Lough Gill outside Sligo Town.
