Leilani Estates (Leilani means beautiful flowers) was one of the three premier neighborhoods in the Puna area. It's proximity to natural wonders like Lava Tree State Park, Champaign Ponds, Tide Pools, Warm Ponds, Kahena Black Sands Beach, and Pohiki Bay, combined with paved roads, large, active Community Center, beautifuly landscaped estates, and friendly people made it a very special place.
However, the 2018 eruption of Kiluea Volcano which exploded out of the ground in the middle of the neighborhood on May 3rd has changed the landscape forever. With over 22 active fissures, some shooting lava fountains 150 feet into the sky, it was the most voluminous eruption in 200 years. By the end of the three month eruption, 700 homes were lost along with all but one of our recreational areas.

You will need a vehicle here, nothing is walking distance and the bus system has been suspended since the Eruption. There are a number of places on the Big Island that require true 4 wheel drive (not all wheel drive) or a serious hike. Our Ohana makes a great base to explore the Big Island or to just chill out in nature.
