Volissos is built on a hill nestling underneath a Genoese castle.
The village looks south out across the blue waters of the Aegean.
As you sit on your terrace enjoying the mountains slowly turning pink in the last rays of the sun, or as you wander around the village as it winds down from the castle, you quickly realize that Volissos is still very much a traditional village.
It is 2 km from its little harbour and marina of Limnia and the nearest beaches of Lefkathia and Limnos, both of which have a beach bar (the use of the umbrellas and sun loungers are free). Just a little further away is the 6 km long Managros beach, where it is always easy to find a quiet spot to enjoy the crystal clear waters of the Aegean sea.
Apart from these, whichever way you go up or down the coast, there are numerous beaches to choose from.
Volissos lies on the north west coast of the island of Chios, 40 km from the main town, port and airport.
Volissos has quite a few tavernas, either in the village or down by the sea, offering a wide choice of delicious Greek food as well as a couple of cafe bars.
At the harbour you can enjoy an ouzo as the sun sets on the fishermen returning from putting out their nets.
The village has two mini markets, a butcher, a baker and even a candle maker. A green grocer comes around three times a week selling produce out of the back of his pickup though you can find fruit and vegetables in the two shops.
Also local fishermen come around with the catch of the day.
There is a Pharmacy, Post Office, Police Station and ATM machine.
Volissos has a small clinic with a doctor always available 24/7.
CHIOS
The island could almost be two islands, its south and north parts are so different in terms of geography and botany. In the northern half mountains and rocky hills prevail covered with pine woods, cypresses and plane trees, as well thyme, oregano and sage.
Southern Chios is noted for the mastic tree as well as its many citrus orchards.
Chios as a whole is famous internationally for a wealth of wild flowers, including its lalades (wild tulips) and an extraordinary variety of orchids ( 92 species in all).
Hiking or driving to get to know the island, Volissos makes for an excellent base for all your excursions.
The island has a good road network.
As you explore the idyllic medieval walled villages of the mastic south , the Byzantine monasteries and churches, the Genoese mansions of the Kambos (central Chios) or the more rugged unspoiled and traditional north, the rich history of Chios will come alive and draw you under its spell!
On the other hand if you are looking for a relaxing easy going holiday, where you can do as much or as little as you want, Volissos is also an ideal spot.
Choose one of its many beaches to laze in the sun before treating yourself to a delicious freshly cooked meal in one of the lovely tavernas.
Chiots are passionate and live life to the fullest, even at difficult times. The result is an island seemingly riddled with challenges, yet full of people loving life.
Chios is still one of the most unspoiled islands in Greece.

If you decide to rent a car/jeep, scooter or a bicycle, I can help you to arrange this. I work with a local car hire company who are very friendly and reliable. They will have the car waiting for you upon your arrival and explain how to get to Volissos where I'll be waiting for you.
If necessary I can also arrange for the local taxi to meet you and bring you up to the village and the house.
There is a bus service to and from the village 3 times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
