The big sky country of the Northumberland National Park is the backdrop to this remote, cosy detached cottage. Situated on the ancient historical monument of Bremenium Roman Fort, an outpost of Hadrians Wall, it's a true rural retreat. The area is a designated Dark Sky Park making this an ideal, off the beaten track, cottage for stargazers. A Victorian detached stone cottage that has been recently renovated but still retains many original features including a huge stone fireplace with a woodburning stove and wooden beams. An established cottage garden is surrounded by open farmland which is ideal for country walks straight from the front door. A car is essential. Roman Cottage is near the England/Scotland border so the Scottish Border County (11 miles), the famous Northumberland Coast (36 miles) and Hadrian's Wall (22 miles) are all easily accessible. For the adventurous, Kielder Forest Drive (5 miles) and Kielder Water (19 miles) provide walking, biking and sailing opportunities. Standing on a village green, which is a wild flower meadow, the site of the cottage was used by the Romans to defend the routes to Scotland. When the Roman Empire pulled back it's frontier to Hadrian's Wall they kept Bremenium manned as outpost, the garrison was probably 6 times larger than the largest fort on the wall. It then became a defensive site for the Border Reivers during the border skirmishes and battles. Now it's a peaceful hamlet of four cottages but the defensive role hasn't ended as the modern British Army still use the moorland as a training area. You may find you have a prime view of the Artillery firing big guns and missiles, Chinooks landing, or infantry training in the woods. Woodland and moorland walks are on your doorstep and the Pennine Way comes within 3 miles of the Cottage. Up to two dogs are welcome as long as they are kept on a lead when in the vicinity of livestock and never left in the cottage by themselves.
We had a great week at Roman Cottage, despite wet weather! The cottage is right on the site of the Roman Fort, with the original wall just beyond the garden gate, which feels amazing! We are a family of 5, with older children (22, 20 and 15), plus dog, so I worried that the house might feel small, but it was fine - bigger than the pictures indicate. Lovely, secluded garden full of flowers which is properly secured so we could let the dog out on her own. Well equipped kitchen.
Fantastic cottage. So cozy and welcoming. Everything you could possibly need in the kitchen so don't bother taking anything. Bedding was crisp and fresh. We had a lovely Christmas at the cottage only thing missing was some snow but im sure if it was in her power Mary would have sorted that as she has thought of everything else. Will definitely be visiting again.
This property is in an incredible location and is super cosy. Mary was brilliant as a host, communicating swiftly about important information and baked a delicious cake for arrival. Couldn’t have had a better time staying here.
Superbly equipped cottage in a beautiful location. Lovely touches like fresh flowers and a very tasty home made cake awaited us on our arrival. If I was to visit that part of Northumberland again I would definitely want to stay at Roman Cottage.
Mary’s cottage was perfect and just what we wanted. It is a home from home with thought for all the kitchen and bathroom needs. The log burner was lovely and plenty of wood was available to use. There were clear instructions for all appliances etc Mary was a very attentive host and proactive with communication - this was much appreciated. The cottage is in a private/ quiet location but perfect for accessing everything - walks / Kielder Forest /Hadrian’s wall / innumerable English heritage sites / coast. We had an amazing time and plan to return to continue or exploration. Fabulous time. Thank you Mary
PUBS/RESTERAUNTS:
The nearest pub (1.4 miles) know to the locals as the First and Last is so called because its the last pub in England when you travel north and the first pub in England as you travel from Scotland. The William de Percy (part of Le Petite Chateaux Wedding Venue), the Coach House and Otterburn Castle are all in Otterburn (5 miles) . West Woodburn (9 miles) has the Bay Horse.
GROCERIES:
Bring your groceries with you or have them delivered (Asda, Tesco or Morrisons). We have a small shop in Otterburn which is useful to top up supplies, otherwise there is a small Co-op in Bellingham (12 miles), in Hexham (28 miles) there is Waitrose, Tesco and Aldi, In Hawick (27 miles) there is a Morrisons, Sainsburys and Lidl and Kingstone Park (33miles) is a large Tesco Extra.
PETROL STATIONS:
Northumberland isn't kind to drivers low on petrol, be careful to fill up when you are out and about and stop at your last town before you arrive. Bellingham, Hexham, Hawick and Jedburgh have petrol, not 24hrs. Kingston ParkTesco has a 24hr station.
A car is essential.
