The stay was great and Steph and her team communicated brilliantly. The location is good, calm and peaceful, would recommend the stay.
Warm welcome. Amazing accommodation. Beautiful grounds. Fun Fishing! Being welcomed to TRF opens your first interaction with Steph and here starts the experience. You won't find a more willing to help and engage host than Steph. From helping us move into our rooms to checking in multiple times to ensure we were comfortable to helping in every possible way, and then some! Steph is the star of TRF. The room was immaculate when we moved in. Exactly the kind of room you would expect in Dullstroom. Stone walls, intimate deck with chairs facing the forest and dams. Spacious room and ample kitchen space for our needs. The complimentary bags of charcoal and firewood were a helpful touch for our first night, too! Oh, don't forget the massive bed with proper bedding! What a treat! The property is well maintained and beautiful. The lush grass, mountain tops and beautiful dams all within arms reach give you the feeling of being walled in by nature but with ample space to explore. A short walk from the rooms lies the most beautiful waterfall which feeds the dams with ice cold mountain water. If you want a place to sit and picnic - you don't get better than besides the crashing water! There are also three beautiful dams on the property. The top dam lies right by the rooms with the main dam just a stonesthrow away through the forest. The last dam is located near the waterfall and makes a stunning backdrop for a romantic picnic or a lie down in the grass. Fishing for trout is also a bunch of fun! I didn't manage to catch in the small dam near the rooms but would recommend dry fly and floating line as it's fairly shallow and has plenty of structure. The main dam is large and has plenty of space to catch. I caught about 4 fish each morning near the reeds and didn't finish exploring the depths of the dam. Would recommend Red Eyed Damsel's in olive or green with a agitator ahead like a DDD, stimulator or GRHE. The dam near the waterfall is a bucket of fun to fish in. Tons of structure so be careful with your cast but super rewarding if you get the fly out near the reeds. I fished mostly medium sinking and fast sinking line but would recommend slow sinking or floating for the two smaller dams and fast sinking for the middle dam. All in all, you can't go wrong with TRF. The location is beyond beautiful, the fishing responsive and fun and the accommodation exactly what you would want for an intimate time away. If you need more clarity than this review, talk to Steph - apart from the excellence of TRF, Steph is the reason we would return over and above other opportunities in the area.
Our picturesque lodge offers a variety of different activities to keep our guests busy. Trout River falls first and foremost is the perfect spot for fly fishing. For our non-fishing guests, there is an abundance of scenery, bird life, wild flowers and hiking trails.
