GUILDFORD:
Located between Castlemaine and Daylesford, 130km north-west of Melbourne in the area once known as Central Victoria’s Golden Triangle; the scene of the 1850’s gold rush, is the small but picturesque village known as Guildford. Set amidst the low hills of the Loddon River and central to the town is Villa Nova, a short stroll from Guildford village’s General Store, local Pub and heritage listed property, ‘Tara’ built in the early 1860’s by a leading Guildford merchant.
Villa Nova guests are welcome to stroll Tara’s extensive and picturesque free flowing garden. Not restricted by formal design Tara’s garden is an evolution of more than 150 years of development and care featuring an endless variety of natives, fruit trees, roses and flowers. Tara’s gardens are also home to the owners’ animals including; Wilson the piglet, Muscovy ducks, chickens, Timmy the Turtle and two green tree frogs which children are welcome to feed by prior arrangement.
March House is a notable historic Guildford building, prefabricated in Scotland and dating back to 1856, this 2 storey iron house is one of the few remaining buildings of its type in Victoria and is owned by the original owners’ great, great, granddaughter.
Guildford is well known for the ‘Big Tree’, a large River Red Gum thought to be over 500 years old and one of the largest in Victoria and has an attractive avenue of Plane trees planted in 1919 in honour of locals who fought in the First World War.
CASTLEMAINE:
Castlemaine’s historic streetscapes are a reminder of its immensely rich gold mining days but today the town boasts a burgeoning food and an eclectic arts scene. The locals have even started calling it (with tongues firmly planted in cheek) 'North Northcote.'

In recognition of this, Maldon was classified as Australia's First Notable Town in 1966 and awarded the ‘Most intact heritage streetscape’ in 2006 by the National Trust. Its list of historic buildings is impressive and visitors can browse through fashion boutiques, sample local produce, take a nostalgic journey on board the Victorian Goldfields Steam Railway, drive up Mt Tarrangower to get a 360 degree view of the area from the lookout tower or follow the Maldon Taste of Gold food and wine trail.
BENDIGO - a vibrant contemporary regional centre created from one of the world’s greatest gold rushes. Wide streets lined by opulent buildings are now interwoven with intriguing laneways and arcades that are home to a new breed of innovators who again delve deep to create a vibrant energy across the city. Public transport between Melbourne and Castlemaine is very good with V Line trains departing from Southern Cross Station.
