Aldeburgh is a beautiful seaside resort with its pastel-coloured houses and pretty High Street. You'll be spoilt for choice with restaurants including The Suffolk with roof terrace and The Regatta for more delicious seafood dishes. There's a fabulous deli, Lawsons for picnic and treat staples and well-renowned Adnams has a High Street store for a range of locally produced wines, beers, and more. The long stretch of shingle beach and vast sea is perfect for a morning dip, and after a long day of exploring, book onto a tour of the stunning Fishers Gin distillery. There are three art galleries in Aldeburgh including Ballroom Arts with exciting collections of art, sculptures and photography for those with a creative mind. The Red House is a must for anyone interested in the life and work of the composer Benjamin Britten. You must also take the time to admire the beautiful four metre high sculpture of a scallop shell on the shingle beach at Aldeburgh. This sculpture is a tribute to Britten and now forms part of the landscape that we know and love. If you fancy a quiet afternoon in, Aldeburgh's cinema is a perfect location to take the family and enjoy a classic or newly released film in a lovely, relaxed atmosphere. This cinema on the High Street has been screening films since 1919 and is truly an engrained part of Aldeburgh's community. After a long stroll down Aldeburgh's charming seafront, around the yacht club to the Martello Tower and back, there is nothing better than to pay a visit to the famous fish and chip shop, frequently labelled the ‘best in the world'! People travel from far and wide to savour these culinary delights whilst sitting on the beach watching the tide slowly roll in.
Snape is just a few miles inland and offers stunning walks to Iken and along The Sailor's Path. Snape Maltings is world-famous concert hall with a packed schedule of events, and there's beautiful shops, cafes, restaurants and a fabulous deli too. Don't miss the monthly Farmer's Market every first Saturday of the month from 9.30am to 1pm. The small village has two pubs, Plough and Sail and Golden Key Inn.
The Suffolk Coast is an AONB with beautiful walks. Thorpeness is every child's dream holiday with easy access to the beach and the Meare. The Meare is a boating lake with connections to J M Barrie's Peter Pan. You can discover the islands with a pirate's den and dragon's lair along with other hidden treasures. The Dolphin and The Kitchen both provide food with local provenance and can provide takeaway. Heading along the coast, Aldeburgh has lots of different restaurants, cafes and bars and a busy High Street with lots of independent shops. Thorpeness Golf Course welcomes visitors and if you would like to play tennis the Country Club offers weekly membership.
Dragging yourself away from the beach there are lots of other places to explore in the local area. Further up the coast, the RSPB Wildlife Reserve at Minsmere is worth a visit. The coastal area sits within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and there are lots of footpaths to explore the heaths and coastland which make up this unique habitat. Or head beyond Aldeburgh towards Orford and discover the history of Orford Ness and explore the forests at Tunstall and Rendlesham. If you are a bit braver you could do this on horseback, setting out from Poplar Park in Hollesley to see the local countryside from horse back or heading down to Shingle Street.
