Nestled in beautiful Washoe Valley and surrounded by Nevada’s varied natural landscape, we hope you will enjoy your stay here as much as we do! Here are some tips to acclimate you to this location:
To the west, you will find our magnificent view of Mt. Rose (to the right) and Slide Mountain (to the left). Lake Tahoe is just over the horizon. You can find countless activities in that direction, from hiking, skiing, mountain biking, swimming and more. Most activities are within a 30-40 minute drive. Closer to home, you will also see the Scripps State Wildlife Preserve, where you can see Eagles, hawks, falcons, California pelicans and many other birds and wildlife. At night you may hear coyotes singing! Hiking is allowed there from August 15 to February 15, though you can always walk on the perimeter road. Across the valley is historic Bower’s Mansion, offering tours, hiking and a swimming pool open in the summer. Near there is Davis Creek Park which has some excellent interpretive hiking trails, along with more strenuous trails. You will also find The Chocolate Factory located on HWY 395, for more indulgent fun!
To the East, you will see the smaller rolling hills of Nevada’s BLM land. This is all public land and is easily accessed by walking east from the house up nearly any road. (E. Guffey is a good one, or Cottontail.)
There are countless roads and trails in BLM, and if you walk up just a little way, you will have a spectacular view of Washoe Lake. The trails are sandy, so wear some good hiking shoes. If you have vehicular toys, you can take them up there and explore.
To the south, you will find the Metropolis of New Washoe City, with a couple of bars, a Dollar General, a 24/7 convenience store and gas station, a True Value Hardware, a veterinary hospital, and a pizza shop. If you continue south, you will come to the entrance to Washoe Lake State Park, where you can access the beach, launch a boat, take a walk, bring a picnic, fly a kite (if you have one.)
Further south is Carson City, the capital of Nevada, which offers all the amenities of a small city; dining, shopping, movies, casinos, gas stations (cheaper than Reno!), hot springs, hiking and more. The Carson River runs through the town and is a nice place to walk. Further south is the town of Genoa, the first settlement in Nevada. They have a really nice public park/historic landmark there, and some fun bars and eateries.
To the north, is Reno which has abundant and diverse dining options, casinos, movies, nightclubs, etc. A couple of highlights are the Automobile Museum, The Nevada Museum of Art, the Reno Aces Baseball park, and a lovely River Walk right downtown along the Truckee River.
