The Black Isle is a peninsula in the Highlands of Scotland, surrounded on three sides by the firths, or coastal inlets, of Cromarty, Beauly and Moray. As such it is an excellent area for wildlife - dolphins, seals, otters, deer and birds of prey to name a few. There are two RSPB reserves nearby. It's also an excellent area for admiring the night skies and a chance to view the Northern Lights, especially in winter, as there is little light pollution.
The Black Isle area is steeped in history and consists of charming towns and villages such as Fortrose and Rosemarkie, with beautiful beach fronts and harbours all along the coast. This makes it great for cyclists and mountain bikers and it has a wide choice of quiet back roads and tracks. There are beautiful views, and a wonderful mix of woodland, water and farmland, making it a special place to explore
For those after a bit more urban life, a short drive away will take you to the cosmopolitan city of Inverness ‘capital of The Highlands'. You will find a wealth of restaurants, shopping and attractions here. It is a memorable city to visit with its Victorian market, shopping centre, art exhibitions, castle and cathedral, as well as walks along the banks of the River Ness.
