Alles top!
The village of Old Bank on Isla Bastimentos (or Basti, as locals call it) is an authentic Caribbean village. It's the real deal. It's far less touristy than Bocas Town and provides guests with the chance to mingle with local residents rather than only other travelers (though there are plenty of opportunities for that, as well).
There are multiple restaurants and bars along the walking path through the village and out over the water, and beautiful views from just about everywhere.
You will definitely hear our neighbors' chickens crowing and may hear Caribbean music coming from the overwater bard in town on weekends and holidays. We think it makes for a relaxing, fun atmosphere that really feels like you're in the Caribbean.
The Sea Monkey is located at the residential east end of Old Bank just a short walk from bars, restaurants, and markets. It feels secluded but also affords the opportunity to be connected to the town. You can fish from your room, swim out to a local snorkeling spot, or hike up into the jungle directly from our property, while also having direct access to Old Bank.
Just outside of the village, Isla Bastimentos is a wild wonderland. A short hike takes you up into the jungle from town, where you can stop for lunch and the views at Coco Hill vegetarian restaurant or a snack and coffee at Up In the Hill Chocolate Farm before heading down the back side of the island to Wizard Beach, a secluded beach that rivals any in the world.
By boat, you can reach the world famous Red Frog Beach for $5 per person in about 10 minutes, where beach bars, surfing, and swimming await. From there, it's possible to hike to Polo Beach, a beautiful, secluded beach overseen by a colorful local resident whom the beach is named after. Polo Beach also has excellent snorkeling.
Further down the island, those up for an adventure can take tours to the Nivida Bat Caves or to visit the Ngobe-Bugle village of Salt Creek, or to the Cayos Zapatillas within the Bastimentos National Park.
The Zapatillas are unspoiled and uninhabited (other than two park rangers who protect them) and feature beautiful beaches and snorkeling, as well as fun, short hikes around their perimeter and interior. Day trips to the Zapatillas usually include a stop at Cayo Coral (or Coral Cay), where you can stop for a snorkel and a seafood lunch at one of the overwater restaurants in the area.
Beyond Isla Bastimentos, guests can take a short kayak to Isla Solarte to snorkel at Hospital Point or take a water taxi or kayak ride to the Blue Coconut, located in one of the most picturesque locations in Bocas. The Blue Coconut has a restaurant and bar and loans out snorkels and stand-up paddle boards to guests who wish to explore their house reef.
The closest island to Old Bank is one of our favorites, Isla Carenero. There are white-sand beaches, waterfront restaurants and bars, and accessible natural wonders. The best part is that it only takes an hour to circumnavigate this small island via an easy, mostly flat hike.
For a night out, most people head to Bocas Town on Isla Colon, which is 5-10 minutes by water taxi from The Sea Monkey and has a wide variety of bars and restaurants. To see more of Isla Colonm, you can rent bicycles, ebikes, and ATVs to ride all the way to Bluff Beach, stopping for a beer or meal on the way, or to Bocas Del Drago and Starfish Beach, where the beach is strung with seafood shacks in the sand. Public transportation is also available to both areas.
No matter what your interests (as long as they include the sea and jungle!), Isla Bastimentos and Bocas Del Toro won't disappoint.
Water taxis from Bocas Town or elsewhere in the islands will drop you off at your bungalow. The fare from Bocas Town is $5 from the Bastimentos Dock on Main/3rd Street in Bocas Town (located a few doors down from La Buga and Buena Vista Cafe). The dock is a $2 taxi ride or a 5-minute walk from the airport.
We are a short walk from the center of Old Bank, and about a 20-minute walk from Wizard Beach. There is also excellent snorkeling just a 15-minute walk through town from the Sea Monkey.
To Red Frog Beach or to the Blue Coconut or Bambua Lodge on Isla Solarte, the fare from our dock is $8.
自我介绍
I'm from the US but have been living in Bocas del Toro, Panama since 2014. We have four overwater bungalows for guests at The Sea Monkey. We live in the village of Old Bank on Isla Bastimentos, a place often referred to as "the real Bocas." When I'm not in Bastimentos, you'll meet our friendly local staff. They're awesome with guests and have all the info you'll need on local activities!
