A lovely cottage with all mod cons and a beautiful view of the fell beyond, in the village of Allithwaite. A short 1.5 miles from the picturesque village of Cartmel with the famous Cartmel races and selection of wonderful pubs and restaurants. There is driveway parking and a pretty cottage garden with comfortable outdoor furniture. Local amenities include a corner shop and pub. Sleeps four in two double bedrooms, the kitchen is spacious with an island and in the cosy living room is woodburner. The property is close to a fairly busy road as it is right in the middle of the village. Traffic can sometimes drive a bit fast, but fortunately plans are afoot to have speed restrictions put in place by the council. The kitchen is open plan with an large island where you can sit and enjoy meals if you prefer not to use the table in the separate living room. There is a porch off the kitchen which leads to the garden. Outside there is a set of comfortable garden furniture, enough for four people, the cushions can be found in the cupboard under the stairs. There is also a small table and chairs for two, another set is available if required. The comfortable living room has a small woodburner and logs are available. Upstairs there is a large bathroom with shower. There are three bedrooms, one of which is closed off for the owner's storage. The other two reasonably sized bedrooms have standard double beds and there are facilities to hang clothes. On the landing is the airing cupboard, it's here you will find an ironing board and iron.
Beautiful place to stay. Everything we could possibly need and more. Very tastefully furnished and well stocked. The little garden at the back is a wonderful bonus. Within walking distance is a pub called The Pheasant Inn with superb food. And Grange over Sand is a great little gem of a place.
Thank you for letting us stay in your beautiful house. It was just perfect for us. We will be back.
Post cottage is a beautiful modern place to stay with stunning views. Only 4 minute drive from the promenade and town and a short drive to the lake district. Paula was very friendly and helpful with quick responses. We loved staying at Post Cottage 🥰
What a total gem Paula’s place is. Immaculate property, with such attention to detail. We just could not fault this place and said we could happily live there! Everything is of the highest quality. Julia, Paula’s sister is next door and on hand to help; nothing was too much trouble. Location is ideal for exploring the local area and very quiet and peaceful; although we had rubbish weather when there, the garden is an idyllic cottage garden to sit in for breakfast or a drink in the evening. Cannot recommend highly enough.
Allithwaite is a south-facing village set on how hills that overlook Morecombe Bay with 1,800 inhabitants. Situated south of the Lake District National Park, located on the Cartmel penisula in Cumbria. Near the coast with good access to major towns, it's set amidst stunning country side. Allithwaite shares parish status with the village of Cartmel, just one and a quarter miles away and very doable by foot. Cartmel is not only famous for it's race meets which take place in May, June, July and August, but also the famous medievel Priory.
Allithwaite is built on limestone. Springs in the area encouraged early settlements. Artefacts from a cave on the outskirts of the village date to approximately 10000BC while Bronze Age remains of 2000BC have also been discovered more recently. The first part of the name Allithwaite, (Eilifr) is said to have come from a Norse settler in about 1000AD and the thwaite part is said to be a clearing in a woodland. For many centuries farming and fishing were the main industries in the village.
Allithwaite is a great base from which to explore the surrounding area. Visit the picturesque village of Cartmel renowned for its historic priory, charming cottages and the famous Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding. Explore artisan shops and cozy dog-friendly pubs. Then there's L'Enclume, Cartmel's famous restaurant which was awarded 3 Michelen stars recently, the only restaurant to do so not located in London or the South of England.
Head to Grange-over-Sands, a delightful Edwardian seaside town with stunning views across Morecambe Bay. Take a stroll along the prom and discover ornamental gardens, and of course there's the local fish and chip shop.
A bit further afield you can explore the beauty of Lake Windermere, the largest lake in England. Cruise its waters or hike along scenic trails. Leave your car at Haverwaithe station and go back in history by catching a ride on the steam train to Bowness.
The charming village of Hawkshead with its medieval buildings, quaint tea rooms and connections to literary greats like WIlliam Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter should not be missed. A visit Beatrix Potter's home, Hill Top, in the village of Sawrey which was her retreat and inspiration is a must.
For a taste of history visit the ruins of Furness Abbey, a magnificent Cistercian monastery dating back to the 12th century located just a few miles from Allithwaite.
Sizergh Castle too which is not far from Kendal, with its rich history and stunning gardens is also recommended, along with Holker Hall, a short 20 minute drive from Allithwaite and home of the Cavendish family.
These are just some suggestions within a decent range of the village, of course going further afield the Lake District has so much to offer, not only in its wealth of history but stunning beauty of the landscape.
