Design principles: The building is sited to harness the elements. Sun coming from over the hill to the east and prevailing winds sweeping up the escarpment are utilised effectively in the design, positioning and construction. The morning sun coming through slot windows to welcome in the day, with the large glazed sections to the back facing west to get the best views over the Vale and the wonderful sunsets. The roof design and central glass atrium, along with the siting, have been specifically considered to make best use of the elements - for lighting, heating and ventilating the house. The design has minimised the need of 'bolt on' products to make it work - for example drain pipes and guttering are not necessary, the interior will be kept warm on cold days and cool on hot days due to the insulative properties of the walls combined with the natural breathing of the house. The visible external walls are made from Hemcrete (a hemp fibre material), which has been demonstrated to have a negative carbon footprint. Internal walls are timber frame and lined with Heraklith which is then plastered using a lime mix similar to the external render to create a breathing, monolithic wall structure. The make up and characteristics of the walls allow them to "breath" and to keep the atmosphere within the building stable. The central atrium supplies the core of the building with light. Additionally, by storing heat from the sun within the thermal mass of the walls and floors - which is then slowly released when the sun gaes down, it helps keep the house warm during the evening. Hot water is provided by a ground source heat pump that also feeds the underfloor pipes to maintain the desired internal temperature. This system is electronically balanced and monitored internally and externally minimising user input. Rain is harvested from the split roof via the central atrium - the stored water is used for flushing wcs, garden watering and the washing machine. Sewage treatment uses a biomass system that employs micro-organisms to breakdown the waste matter allowing treated eftluent ta be passed into the watercourse. The roof material is sprayed rubber and is harmless to the environment throughout the product's life and is recyclable. Insulation fbr the roof and other non Hemcrete construction, is'W'armcell cellulose fibre. This is, in essence, shredded newspaper recycled and insect and fire retardant. The internal paints are ECOS throughout - 7000x purer than the latest EU regulations and solvent free. The natural make up of the paints work in conjunction with the wall materials to maintain breathability of the structure. Flooring is compressed Multrerry board on the upper level. This is a by product of the silk industry, the twigs falling as a result of the harvesting process are then laminated together to create the flooring boards. Windows are high performance incorporating a heat reflecting coating on the inner surface of the glass and argon gas within the glazing cavity, exceeding by some way current building regulations.
