Great location, such a beautiful view from inside specially during fall with all those beautiful colourful trees. Cheryl put a nice welcome letter along with chocolate box! It was very nice of her! Place was clean, cute, and had everything essentials including cookware, coffee, jam/honey/butter in the fridge. They even had hair straighteners!!! We enjoyed our stay and will definitely recommend it!
This place was a home away from home during a trying move from NC to VA. The main house, in which the hosts reside, is very close but that meant for a quick response if any issue were to arise.. they were accommodating but also made sure to allow us privacy and a much needed reprieve from a fast pace life that we left in NC. I would/will recommend this cabin always. Don’t hesitate if you’re looking for something cozy, quite, and very relaxing to book this place for your much vacation!
This was a great spot to crash after long days in the park or exploring the surrounding area, and our dogs were comfortable resting here on days when we couldn't take them to the park (some areas don't allow dogs). Due to not always being able to take them we did find ourselves frequently driving back and forth so we could check on them. Door to trail, it took us about an hour to go in via the Thornton Gap entrance and make our way to whatever trailhead/parking area we were headed for that day. We found ourselves most frequently entering at Thorndale and exiting at Swift Run and the timing felt about the same both directions. There are two trailheads that are outside the park that are on the main road leading from Etlan to Sperryville - Old Rag and Whiteoak. Both of these areas are accessible within the park too, but it could save you time if you are someone who can hike a while and doesn't mind going around on foot. Things in the park are spread out to the north and south - there aren't really any good "central" locations that get you access to a lot of different areas (except maybe Skyland, but you need to go in the park to get there from the side of the mountains that this home is located). The home was as described in photos. We spent most of our time upstairs. We cooked most of our own meals due to dietary restrictions, so we stopped at a Wegmans in Warrendale ~1 hour away to stock up on groceries. This home has a gas-powered stove in the kitchen as well as a toaster oven and microwave as described. Pots & pans were in fine shape for what we needed. There are limited stores nearby (and the closest place closed at 6, we were usually still in the park at that time) so highly recommend bringing food if you want something specific. We were able to visit Culpeper for a meal and we went to the Bavarian Chef (in Madison I believe) for a meal as well. Most places were closed Sunday-Tuesday so keep in mind if you're planning weekday stays. We were about an hour from Luray Caverns as well, definitely a cool spot to check out. There is a winery within 5 minutes of this place called Blue Quartz, which we enjoyed. We also visited Sharp Rock and DuCard which were the two closest to this home. Of the two, Sharp Rock was our favorite - great vibe and the owner was super nice! We went to Copper Fox Distillery in Sperryville and also Before & After (coffee shop/cafe) in Sperryville. There were a ton more wineries to check out - the signs are all over the place along the roads connecting all these little towns. The hours they were open just conflicted with the time we wanted to be in the park, so I would plan on days doing wineries and days in the park - trying to do half and half was just too difficult in terms of the time it takes to drive around. The internet was fine for our purposes - pulling up directions and streaming shows. The TV has a Roku box with Guest Mode and gets you access to apps like Hulu, Netflix, (if you have accounts with them) and ABC and NBC (if you have a cable provider login). The Roku also had limited "cable" channels to browse (no live sports though if anyone in your group is a sports watcher). All around good for what we needed, which was a place to sleep, cook, and have our dogs when they couldn't be along with us!
Dear Cheryl (and Mike), thank you so so very much for the opportunity to spend some precious time - away from the hustle and bustle of city life - in your beautiful cottage. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and couldn't have asked for anything more. Thank you for the breakfast and the small bottle of wine that was enjoyed within 10 mins of our arrival on Friday evening. Our fur baby Milo also sends his appreciation. He loved the indoor heat and the sight of a warm fire (as did we!). Thanks again for everything. We are eternally grateful for our time and look forward to the possibility of a follow-up visit. Marcel, Karolien, & Milo - Ephesians 3: 16-21
