We stayed at Dan and Berndt's chocolate farm for four nights while visiting the Hilo area. Our stay was simply amazing! The house the two guest rooms are in sits above the rest of the property and therefore overlooks the farm's gardens and Hilo Bay. The room itself is also well equipped. It has a comfortable bed, a closet and a couple chairs. You also have access to a shared kitchen, where Dan and Berndt make their chocolate. Walking into the kitchen was like walking into a chocolate factory, as it smelled so good! Speaking of Dan and Berndt, they were super friendly and knowledgeable about cacao and the many plants found on their farm. We also took part in their farm tour, which you shouldn't miss if you stay with them as it was a lot of fun and you'll even learn a thing or two. Overall we really enjoyed our stay and would recommend the Hamakua Chocolate Farm to others.

Diese Unterkunft ist ein Juwel, oberhalb der Schokoladenfarm gelegen, mit Blick auf den liebevoll angelegten Garten und das Meer. Die Gastgeber waren ausgesprochen herzlich. Wenn wir wieder nach Hilo kommen, dann definitiv wieder zu Bernd und Dan.

We had a Unique & Memorable experience & It was a Great stay 🤩. The room offers a serene & picturesque setting with views of the bay, providing a perfect retreat for those looking to unwind & reconnect nature. Can enjoy chocolate farm & even sample some delicious treats. The farm itself is a peaceful oasis, with opportunities to explore the grounds & take in the beauty of the tropical landscape. The morning sunrise was stunning while having hot cacao husk tea at Lanai & nighttime without TV is a plus for us, listening to river & coqui frogs/wildlife was mesmerizing.Take note: right side window without blind is a star gazing,it was magical. Superb-host, make us feel family. They were gracious sharing their knowledge about the island, always available when needed & give us full guide where to eat. Thank you again for kindness & hospitality. Overall, the Hilo Bay Room at the Hamakua Chocolate Farm offers a one-of-a-kind stay that combines comfort, nature, & a touch of chocolate magic. 6🤩

Dan and Berndt were OUTSTANDING hosts! While Berndt stayed mainly in the background, Dan was outgoing, and was proud to show off the grounds that he and Berndt have created, listing off all the spice trees and flora, and grabbing a leaf or twig for us to sample as we meandered through the six-acre property. He gave us taste-tests of the different chocolate flavors that they make - this is NOT your average chocolate! There was time to really *experience* the taste, and to talk about what went into each piece. His dining and activity recommendations were spot-on, and it was great to have a “local” give us the inside scoop. The saddest part of the whole stay was having to leave. 😞. But we’ll be back - that is for certain! Aloha, Dave & Nak

We spent 3 nights at Berndt and Dan's place and had a wonderful time exploring the Hilo side of the island, including starting and ending each day at this very peaceful oasis. The grounds really are remarkable - a sculpted, yet natural landscape that is extremely impressive and peaceful and worthy of casual strolls. While Hilo is 10 or so minutes away by car (close by Big Island metrics), this working cacao farm feels forever away from everything in all the best ways. Having coffee in the morning outside, we would watch whales in the distance, which was just such a peaceful way to start each morning. And the smell of chocolate being prepared is pretty amazing as well (as is tasting the innovative creations). Dan was extremely friendly and both engaged us when we had questions and left us alone as appropriate. Dan and Berdt's place is a real gem and added a lot to our week-long visit to the Big Island.
