Jamal’s brother Ali hosted us for one night in the cave and cooked an excellent meal for us the night before. The place is extremely peaceful, away from the chaos of Petra city and roughly 15 minutes by car from both the main and “back” entrances to the archeological park. It’s the perfect way to visit Petra staying as far away as possible from the crowds. I highly recommend staying here and having dinner on the fire as well, great experience and lots of delicious food (roughly 400g of chicken/lamb per person and lots of vegetables, bread, hummus, labneh and moutabal). As an added bonus we also had foul with bread in the morning! Looking forward to staying with them again.

Incredible experience, living the original way like a Bedouin! we particularly loved our host Jamal, who was there to answer any question and provide his help! Make sure to combine your stay with the dinner (prepared on the fire only for you)!

It was absolutely outstanding stay in Jamal cave. He provided us great dinner for best price and gave us a lot of good tips for visiting Petra. We spent together good time. If you want to get unforgettable experience from Jordan visit Jamal and talk with him about life in Jordan. Cave is simple but really stylish and comfortable for sleeping with nice panorama view out of the door. Jamal is willing to help you with everything you need. Hope to see him again next time in Petra ;)

Beware of last minute changes to your reservation!! Unfortunately we did not get to stay in Jamal’s cave accommodation. At 4 pm, we contacted Jamal to check-in and at that point he told us it was not possible to stay in the cave because of legal and permitting problems... with the weather and a danger for rain. Although, according to the two weather forecasts we saw, and the actual outcome later, the weather was clear with 0% chance of rain. If the reason for our cancelled cave experience was because of “legal problems” then Jamal should have contacted us when he discovered it... in the morning. Not at 16:00 of the same day of our check-in when we didn’t have other options for reasonable accommodation. We paid double the amount of money to have a cave sleeping experience than we paid for our accommodation in Petra the previous evening. Although Jamal did provide us a (paid) dinner in the cave (which was wonderful) as some form of compensation, there were many other problems we encountered: the dinner was delayed because he didn’t have the food and supplies prepared despite our reservation weeks before, and (importantly) the money we gave him from Airbnb was not talked about in compensation for us now staying at Family Home. He did give us a small discount on dinner for us driving our personal car to the cave, but our payments to him were not transparent or explained to us and at least dinner should have been cheaper or free based on the fact he didn’t deliver on what he advertised. Our sleeping alternative to the cave was at his other accommodation location called Family House. While staying at the Family House, there was no heater (although the other guests received one), no hot water, no towels, and no WiFi info provided, although Jamal’s brother did do a good job of trying to meet our needs and welcome us. Despite this, it definitely did not provide us with the comparable value that we paid extra for staying in the cave. All in all, we did not feel accurately or appropriately compensated for what we paid for, and left us with a bad taste in our mouths.
