Tranquil neighbourhood
Spring is a tropical hillside enclave on the Atlantic side of the island. Subtle villas are dotted around the old plantation commanding beautiful views of the coconut groved Spring Bay. The neighbourhood is peaceful and secluded, the sound of birds and tree frogs at night dominating the airwaves. Hummingbirds and fireflies hover around the treeline, whilst Hawks swoop up high.
Just down the hill isThe Firefly Hotel houses a lovely open colonial restaurant and cocktail bar and a large pool to lounge aside.
The bustling, but laid back, Harbour
A ten minute drive takes you into Port Elizabeth, or what the locals call the 'Harbour'. Here you have many restaurant choices along the Belmont Walkway, which is almost like walking along an aquarium so wonderful is the sea life you note in the clear waters. You get great pasta at Laura's, fabulous pizza at Macs, amazing local fish and a hearty welcome by Cheryl at Fig Tree and perfect ice cream at Marannes. Not forgetting cake and coffee at the Gingerbread, possibly one of the most picturesque cafes in the world nestled under an almond tree with a jetty straight into the azure sea.
And if diving is your thing - Check out Dive Bequia right next to The Gingerbread. Bob and Cathy will give you a warm welcome.
Perfect Beaches
Just a hop away you find the two best beaches on the island - Lower Bay and Princess Margaret's. Both have great swimming and headland reefs for snorkelling, but they have a different feel. Princess Margarets is secluded surrounded by lush vegetation on one side and a favourite of the yachting visitors. Jacks Bar is a great high end bar to while away the hours.
Lower Bay is more local, but very much as beautiful. A swing on the palm tree, a little reef offering a natural paddling pools and four affordable and laid back eating places make it relaxed and somewhere you can easily while away the day on. De Reef and Keegans all offer basic, yummy, local fare and can knock up a rum punch and a cold beer to quench your thirst. Slightly off the beaten track, Dawn's Creole is a little more laid back and the food a little more special. Up a hill, Nandos, is a Bequia institution and the real deal when it says it is 'fish to fork', with the catch of the day always being the meal of the evening.
The real Caribbean
Down in Paget Farm, or Southside as the locals call it, near the airport is Toko's Step down bar. A really rustic, real Caribbean bar which serves the most sublime fish menu should you ask in advance. Have a chat with Toko, he has many stories to tell.
Bequia is a small and hilly island with a pleasant 28 degrees most of the time. People do happily walk around the island, but it is very easy to hire a car or take one of the numerous taxis based in the Harbour.
Taxis
There are lots of taxis available many of whom park in the Harbour. We can recommend Brinsley, Hi-Rider and Gideon, but they are all good!
