Hotel Hakuunsou is a brilliant option for anyone looking for an authentic Japanese feel to their accommodation, with the added bonus of being located within east reach of routes up the Alps via the Shinhotaka Ropeway or via Hirayu Onsen and onto Kamikōchi. Takayama is also easily accessed via a direct bus that departs from right outside the hotel. The bedroom facilities are very comfortable with ample space and privacy. My only feedback is more wardrobe space & drawers for clothes are needed. The food was very well prepared and to a high standard and the private Onsen spaces are divine, a real win after a long day’s walking. Thao was always very responsive and kind in her service so I’d gladly book again. My only general feedback is they lacked proactivity in giving tourism advice for the local area. If you are interested in exploring the options around the area then you’ll need to do the research yourself; they do have pamphlets at the hotel but weren’t able to comment on them.

Me and my partner had a lovely stay. Upon arrival we were greeted by a lovely staff member. She welcomed us with warm cup a tea. During our stay we ate twice and we thoroughly enjoyed the food. The room does state that there is a washing machine, but this is slightly inaccurate. There isn’t a private machine but the lady who greeted us on the first day offered a service to clean our for 500 yen. We greatly appreciated this, and the washing detergent she used smelt amazing. The highlight of this place was the onsens. We never used the indoor onsens but the outdoor onsens were beautiful. After a long day walking they were an ideal way to recover. We would definitely recommend this hotel to hikers or anyone hoping to experience a ryokan.

wonderful stay! my husband and I enjoyed our time where and hope to make it back one day. we had a wonderful experience here and even had snow greeted us when we woke up the first morning. one thing I would say is to bring lots of cash, as there are no ATMs nearby, and most of the area is cash only.

We enjoyed our stay at this Japanese traditional inn very much! The room was spacious and comfortable. The private indoor and outdoor baths were quaint, but relaxing. It was convenient to have meal options because there are not many restaurants in the area. But overall, great location with access to many beautiful nature spots like Kamikochi! The host was kind and attentive, providing us with many recommendations prior to our arrival. She also speaks great English. Very foreigner-friendly accommodations. Thank you very much!
