tThembre Cottage is unique, in its architecture and offer of ecotherapy. It has been well recognised by Conde Nast Traveller & Lonely Planet. Situated amidst lush green surroundings and views of the hills, it is a few steps away from ShantiKunj, an exemplary flora nursery. The bus/taxi stand in the town centre is not too far. Walks in all directions leads the flaneur through Kalimpong’s suburbs to the scenic Pujedara or to the Roerich centre at the iconic British-era Crookety up on the hill. tThembre was inspired by the work of the Gandhian architect Laurie Baker. Immediately discernible as your glance alights on the house are open bricks in a ‘rat trap’ bond. Baker had adapted this technique from what is called the Flemish bond which craves 25 percent fewer bricks in its wall construction. Each course includes a brick laid across the two narrow walls producing an interlocking cavity within the wall, thus insuring healthier thermal efficiency and structural strength. Working within the prevailing topography (the site existed in the form of garhas or terraces), site preparation was minimal and the house rose organically with mostly local materials called together by local artisans. Revealing cross ventilation, old trees and bamboos are purposely retained. As is a bit of wilderness. Views of hills and surrounding nurseries (Kalimpong is famous for these!) are veiled only to bestow a measure of ecotherapy, literally at hand. Walks in all directions leads the flaneur through Kalimpong’s suburbs to the scenic Pujedara overlooking the Relli valley or to the Roerich centre at Crookety up on the hill. tThembre is a local word signifying mixedness and hybridity. Invoking Kalimpong’s cosmopolitan past where various cultures and peoples merged and mingled, this one-time "harbour of Tibet" looks across the borders, not least the Jelep-la into Tibet/China. Inviting the eclectic but deferring pastiche, the commingled chromosome of tThembre offers a unique encounter to the less boisterous traveller. The terrace is perfect for a cup of coffee or tea with a book in Kalimpong’s bracing mornings and its spectacular evenings. The cottage comes equipped with a fully functional kitchen equipped with an induction stove, microwave oven, electric kettle, toaster, cutlery and crockery. We also have in-house washing machine to help you out with your laundry. We also have a small additional bedroom apart from the main 2 to accomodate your driver/maid. If cooking is not your thing and you are unable to step out of the house to get some really good food, don’t worry as we have home delivery service exclusively provided by ‘DOORSTEP’ for all our guests for food from most of the famous restaurants of Kalimpong. We would love you to drop by at Za-Khang, the only authentic Bhutanese restaurant located 2km away from the premises which serves delectable popular local dishes which we highly recommend. To help you explore the local sights and sounds around Kalimpong, we provide scooters on rent and we are always available to help plan a local itinerary for you.
