Enjoy the lovely setting of this romantic spot in nature. Located at Mangersta Croft Holidays, the Yellow Shepherd's Hut is perfect for two with an en-suite shower, self catering kitchen and views across the croft to the ocean. Explore the incredible landscape and wildlife around the hut, nestling between the Uig Hills and the spectacular sandy beaches and sea cliffs of the Mangersta headland. An authentic taste of island life is guaranteed on this working croft, where cows and sheep graze. The Yellow Shepherd's Hut has a lovely vintage feel to the décor and makes a romantic retreat, sleeping two on one double bed. Search for Mangersta Croft Holidays and Mangurstadh Gallery for further info/ images of the exact location. The hut is fully insulated, with electric heating making it warm and cosy in any season. It has an en-suite shower/W.C. (toilet roll, shampoo/soap and towels are included in the booking). There is WiFi, and a TV/DVD player for watching a selection of DVDs (there is no TV network signal in the hut), plus interesting books on island life and nature. The kitchen has a 2 ring hob, microwave/grill, toaster, kettle, full size fridge, coffee maker, frying pan, cooking pots and bowls and all the cutlery and crockery needed to make a meal. Complimentary tea bags, ground coffee, sachets of UHT milk, salt, pepper and sugar are provided, along with dish cloths and washing up liquid. A small table and chairs beside the window offer relaxing views to take in while eating. There is simple bench seating immediately outside the Hut to sit out on a fine day. There is also the option to cook outdoors within a handcrafted stone wall enclosure for camp fires and BBQs. This area is shared with other guests and is a lovely spot to relax, listen to bird song, socialise and take in the beauty of a west coast sunset. Uig has one of the darkest skies in Europe. Therefore on clear nights in winter, spring and autumn there are incredible views of the milky way and you might even be lucky enough to catch the occasional aurora borealis. Please remember that you will be travelling to a beautiful and very popular island location. It is therefore advisable to book flights or ferries at the same as your accommodation.
Excellent stay at the cozy Shepherds Hut. Well appointed and very clean. The surrounding area is beautiful and the walk to the beach is easy. Elsie was very responsive and welcoming. Will definitely return!
Lovely wee spot in a beautiful location. Perfectly central to explore the North and the South of Lewis and Harris. It's tiny, but it literally had everything we could possibly need - even a potato masher! We were perfectly cosy in rainy weather and it was the perfect spot to return to for dinner and rest after long days of hiking amd exploring.
Wunderschöne Lage, gemütliche Unterkunft und sehr nette Gastgeber*innen! Ich war durch und durch zufrieden.
We had a wonderful two night stay in the yellow hut. It’s the most beautiful location so close to the beach and the cliffs for amazing sunsets. We had two days of sunshine and it was lovely to come back to the cosy hut after a day of hiking in the wind. The hut has everything you need for a comfortable stay. Elsie was very welcoming and recommended us some great walks in the local area when we arrived. We would definitely recommend and would love to come back, thank you!
Mangersta is a tiny crofting village of 13 scattered houses and pretty fields. The cabin is situated in a field next to the croft house and family home of hosts Derek and Elsie. We keep Aberdeen Angus cattle, blackface sheep, harvest fodder crops in the in-bye croft fields and grow vegetables in the garden and polycrub. A small studio gallery is on site where guests are welcome to browse landscape photography and paintings. The cabins and huts are also decorated with original art works by artists Derek and Elsie.
The Uig area has over 20 white sandy beaches, a range of rugged hills, off shore islands and a sea loch to explore. Lovers of wild nature and the great outdoors will relish a holiday in this National Scenic Area.
There are numerous stunning walks and cycles from our doorstep but if you want to explore the rest of Lewis and Harris, a car would be advisable. The Callinish Stones and other cultural attractions e.g. The Iron Age House at Bostadh, the Carloway Broch and the Arnol Blackhouse Museum can be comfortably reached by car.
Driving distances to Mangersta from the ferries and airports are:
1hr 10min from Stornoway Airport;
1hr from Stornoway Ferry Terminal (and Tescos supermarket);
2hrs from Leverburgh ferry in Harris;
1.5hrs from Tarbert ferry in Harris.
It is advisable to book ferries and flights at the same time as your accommodation, as they can get very busy, particularly in the summer.
There is a public bus service with pick up/drop off at the top of our driveway. The bus service is limited and needs advance planning (see the Comhairle nan Eilean Siar website for timetables).
