In central Petworth, Peppermint Cottage is a 3-bedroom 16th Century Tudor cottage, exquisitely furnished for 1-7 guests, with free OFF-STREET PARKING (a rarity here). With footpaths right outside for fine country walks, and Petworth House and deer park a couple of minutes' walk away, it offers the best of town and country living. Character features & modern convenience weave through each room. Dining Hall; large sitting room with 55" Smart TV; AGA log burner; COURTYARD GARDEN Dishwasher!! With three bedrooms - including a king with en-suite - Peppermint Cottage is a beautiful and huggable fairytale property with beams galore, and it is also one of the larger cottages in the beautiful market town of Petworth. This pretty unspoiled Sussex market town in the heart of the South Downs National Park has a hugely vibrant arts' scene and splendid restaurants, cafes, pubs, individual shops and antique emporiums. Converted thirty years ago from two 16th Century workers' cottages, Peppermint Cottage is unusually spacious for an historic property in the town. As well as a master bedroom with en-suite (and king-size Tempur memory-foam mattress), there is another pretty double bedroom, as well as a funky Queen Elizabeth II-themed room (with a fitted timber bunk bed) which doubles as a work-from-home space and dressing room if you are travelling without teens/children. *We can also place an additional single bed in this bunk room, if requested before arrival. We have a large and very comfortable sitting room, and a fully-equipped kitchen including bakeware, vintage crockery and Le Cruset cookware, as well as a dishwasher and microwave. There is also a whisper-quiet washing machine. Ideally situated four minutes' walk from Petworth House (National Trust), this immaculately-restored Tudor cottage overlooks the Shimmings Valley at the rear, with footpath access for fine country walks. There is a private parking space for one car, and further parking nearby. Full details will be provided on these options. Beaches: Petworth is 12 miles or so from the coast - it takes just over half an hour to drive to the wonderful wild beach with dunes and a nature reserve at West Wittering, near Chichester where you can pre-book parking by the sea. Petworth: The cottage is just two minutes' walk from the main entrance to Petworth Park with 700 acres of Capability Brown landscaping to explore. As well as the deli with cheese room (The Hungry Guest) did you know there is a CINEMA in Petworth? The Petworth Film House (leconfieldhall dot org dot uk) is just a five-minute stroll away and offers the latest films and a bar, together with regular live-streams from the Royal Opera House. There are usually several films a week. We have comfortable furniture for six, and a collection of oil paintings in this beamed Grade II-listed cottage that oozes warmth and character. There is an AGA log-burner in the sitting room, and a pretty courtyard with teak seating for six. Six people can also eat in the dining hall at the 7ft-long dining table, and we can seat six at a push around the kitchen table. There is a laundry room with washing machine, butler sink, clothes airer, iron and ironing board to help you prepare for a day out or deal with sandy beach clothes (it's just 25 mins drive to the wonderful wild beach of West Wittering). * Perfect for couples, families, friends, multi-generational stays, or as a solo retreat! There is a private, named parking space for you to use on the private lane overlooking open countryside at the rear of the property. Staying here puts you ten seconds walk away from glorious countryside and fabulous walks to Bedham Hill, The Mens Nature Reserve, and beyond: Wander all day long without crossing a road and go in search of the unspoiled River Arun - the next valley over and three miles away (maps provided). If it's the vibrant town and arts scene that you seek, a secret passageway leads from Peppermint Cottage to the pavement on the front 'town side' of the property, with its black and white Tudor facade. After two minutes you will reach the magical underground entrance to Petworth House's deer park (free entry from dawn to dusk) with 700 acres to explore and breathtaking views of the South Downs. Petworth House (National Trust) and the Co-op is two minutes' walk further on. NB. You can also walk to the centre of town on a footpath along the top of fields overlooking the beautiful Shimmings Valley (a map of the footpaths to the rear of the property is provided for guests). This route includes a stunning section of paved rural footpath - with stunning panoramic views - that leads all the way to The Angel; the town's most popular dining pub! Features * Three bedrooms (one king with en-suite; one double; one with bunk-beds). * AGA log burner in the 17 ft-long sitting room, which seats six comfortably. * 14 ft-long Dining Hall with seven-foot dining table (seating six). * Additional table (seating 4-6) in the kitchen - perfect for kitchen suppers. * King-size Louis XIV-style bedroom (The Emerald Room) with fitted wardrobe and dressing table. * Double bedroom (The Doe Room) with chest of drawers and hanging rail. * Third bedroom/dressing room/home office (The Elizabeth Room), equipped with a desk & wardrobe, and with bunk beds. * Monogrammed Peppermint Cottage waffle-weave towelling robes and soft bamboo towels are provided for all adult guests. * High-quality soft eco-bamboo 400-thread count bed-linen. * Shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, bubble bath. * Board games, art, books, and vintage crockery. * Fully-equipped kitchen, with Le Cruset cookware, ready to rustle up a meal or snack at any time of day, or just pop your wine in the fridge and head into town to eat out (restaurants, cafes, pubs, in abundance). * Character beams throughout. We have masses of board games, and there are lots of suggestions for walks, dining, beaches to visit, as well as a shelf of Penguin novels to explore! We leave shampoo, conditioner, and bubble bath to make it easy, together with salt, pepper, olive oil, flour, tea and coffee. Peppermint Cottage - layout in detail: A short path leads from your parking spot on the hill-top lane at the rear of the cottage to the courtyard - a private sanctuary that is perfect for a morning cup of coffee or an evening drink. Two stone steps lead up to a stable door (NB no hand rail): Inside, enter our 14 ft-long dining hall with seven-foot long table (and plenty of place to hang your coats and stow shoes/wellies). Beyond this is the recently refurbished and fully-equipped kitchen with breakfast area seating six. To the left is the 17 ft-long sitting room with log-burner; two comfortable sofas (one three-seater; one two-seater), and velvet upholstered chaise chair with companion footstool and 55" smart TV. A painted staircase with grip treads leads upwards through ancient beams to the characterful landing. Up three steps to your left is the elegant master-bedroom suite - The Emerald Room - with King-size Louis XIV bed from The French Bed Company with deep Tempur memory-foam mattress; wardrobe; soft-as-silk bamboo bed linen; John Lewis cushions; vintage dressing table & modern en-suite with shower. Ahead of you is a pretty double room - The Doe Room - with beams aplenty, clothes hanging rail, bamboo bed linen and a chest of drawers. Behind you is the third bedroom - The Elizabeth Room - with wardrobe. This is set up as a home office/dressing room (super-fast Wifi). There is a desk in front of the window, and bunk beds as well as an additional single if requested upon booking. On the landing is a pretty modern bathroom with a lovely bath and character beams. To access the private courtyard: Ascend the two steps through the stable door at the rear of the property and you will find an enclosed courtyard with plants and a teak dining table and six chairs. If you are travelling with a baby we have a cot (with sheets) and a high chair available at no additional charge. Dogs are also welcome. We'd love to welcome you!
We had a wonderful stay at Peppermint Cottage, it is idyllic, full of charm and character and very cosy too. The location is fantastic and within easy walking distance of Petworth with its pubs, restaurants and tea shops which we loved. We would particularly recommend The Angel Inn, a fabulous dog friendly pub serving excellent food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We did also cook "at home" several evenings as the kitchen is spacious and well equipped and the dining area and living room very comfortable. The cottage is also close to Petworth Hall, we thoroughly enjoyed walking our dog at the Deer Park there, it really is stunning and also free! Parking was easy and we found Petworth ideal as a base to visit places such as Arundel, Chichester and the beautiful West Wittering Beach. Jane was an excellent host, always quick to respond and very helpful. We would highly recommend Peppermint Cottage and hope to return one day!
We loved our stay at Peppermint Cottage. It’s a short walk into Petworth and very convenient for Petworth House. We were a bit concerned about parking but managed to park two cars with one on the grass verge. Jane was very accommodating in providing an extra single bed so we didn’t have two adults in the bunk bed. The stairs in the cottage are quite steep but my eighty year old parents were able to use them without any problems.
A magical stay at the beautifully appointed Peppermint Cottage, with every comfort provided and a lovely warm welcome from Jane, our host, who was on hand should we need anything. A brilliant experience all round!
We loved staying at Peppermint cottage and exploring Petworth and the Deer Park. Great pubs and walks. The cottage had everything we needed and was very clean and cosy. Thank you Jane for being a great host. Michelle

I'm an author, journalist and picture framer who has had a 30-year-long love affair with Morocco. I've created several homes with Moroccan interiors in the UK, including a house featured on Grand Designs in 2001, having first visited Essaouira three decades ago. At that point, the route to Marrakesh was a dusty B-road and much of Essaouira's new town was nothing more than wind-tousled sand. It has long been my dream to own a holiday home in Morocco, and I'm delighted to share Dar Azrak - The Azure House - with you. I have also been inspired by my travels in Morocco to create Bluebell - a shepherd's hut in West Sussex, UK, which features Moroccan touches in her interior design.
