So, why “Under the Blues”? …. Good Question.
To the west of Monticello are the Abajo Mountains, known locally as the Blue Mountains or “The Blues”. The mountain range is located within the Manti-La Sal National Forest. The highest point within the range is Abajo Peak at 11,360 feet (3,463 m). It is possible to drive to the highest point on rugged dirt roads where there are multiple operating antennas.
One unique characteristic of the Abajo’s is the horse head (see picture) that is outlined in the mountain with trees and snow (or ground cover). It’s hard to find but once you find it, it is fun to know where it is and the locals will be impressed.
Our remodeled brick home is 1 block to the grocery store and gas station.
Monticello has a small town character. The foothills of the Abajo mountains are 2 miles away and a great place to take a beautiful drive. Hwy 191 is one block away and easy access for day trips or just passing through.
Monticello is a gateway to outdoor adventures. Bears Ears National Monument with many native American ruins are 35 miles, Canyonlands National Park (needles) is 49 miles and Moab is 53 miles.
Monticello has 9 restaurants with BBQ, Mexican, burgers, pizza, Thai and sandwiches. Right outside of town is the Canyon Country Discovery Center which is a non-profit educational center where you can learn about the surrounding land. 1 mile away is beautiful Hideout Golf Course which features 18 holes and is a hidden gem. During the summer months there are city and county celebrations both in Monticello and around San Juan County.
