Bachelors Lodge, Hundon sits in the grounds of Bachelors Hall which was a secret lair of the British Resistance, requisitioned by the army in the Second World War. The main house and coach house (where soldiers were billetted) was the nerve centre of what would have formed an underground network of resistance fighters ready to repel a German invasion. It was kept under wraps by the Official Secrets Act for 50 years. The house itself is set in tranquil gardens, surrounded by meadows, yet it's close enough to a wealth of attractions and things to do, see and explore.
Hundon is just two miles from Clare, Suffolk's smallest town with over 2000 residents. Suffolk became extraordinarily wealthy from its production and trade of woollen cloth. This wealth was then used to build some of the finest timber framed houses in the country, including in Clare, Cavendish, Long Melford and Lavenham. Clare has over 130 listed buildings, a host of independent shops, cafes and pubs, a wonderful ‘Wool Church' and Clare Ancient House Museum. For those who enjoy nature, you must visit the 36-acre Clare Castle Country Park is the perfect place to take the dogs with impressive views, an old railway with café attached and it's open 365 days a year. Or you may prefer to play golf at the 9-hole Clare Golf Course.
Haverhill is just a 15-minute drive away and has numerous supermarkets including Tesco and Sainsbury's. The Cineworld multi-screen complex has daily screenings of current films.
Sudbury is a 30-minute drive. Set on the River Stour, this ancient market town is surrounded by water meadows in an Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Known as the historic jewel in Suffolks Crown. The town is overflowing with history, independent shops, restaurants and beautiful architecture. The Quay theatre offers a full programme of live music, comedy, film and music. Gainsborough's house is the birthplace of one of the leading English painters, Thomas Gainsborough. The house is now a Museum and Gallery.
There's a wealth of stately homes nearby, all worth a visit: Ickworth House and Melford Hall, Kentwell Hall and Farm, and Hedingham Castle, a fine Norman castle and grounds. Slightly further away are Anglesey Abbey Gardens and Lode Mill; a working watermill milling corn to flour. There's Wimpole Hall and Farm, Audley End House and Gardens with a miniature railway next to the house, and Helmingham Hall.
Newmarket Race Course is a British Thoroughbred horse racing venue, founded in 1665 and now hosts many events offering an exhilarating family day out. There are also music events including horse racing and a concert. Newmarket is also home to the famous National Horse Racing Museum. Newmarket's famous for its two brands of sausage, Musks and Powter's.
Thetford Forest is 40-minutes away and offers fantastic off-road cycling and mountain bike trails with bike hire available at High Lodge. If you fancy a treetop adventure, zip trekking, forest segway, net adventures, plummets, axe throwing and sundown trees, try Go Ape.
The Fry Public Art Gallery houses an impressive number of paintings, illustrations, wallpapers and decorative designs by artists of the 20th century and present day from Saffron Walden and surrounding areas. To name a few, John Aldridge, Peggy Angus, Edward Bawden, Bernard Cheese, Olive Cook, Grayson Perry, Eric Ravilious, Tirzah Ravilious, and Sheila Robinson.
Bury St Edmunds is a must-visit. The medieval grid is stunning. The most famous landmark are its impressive Abbey ruins and adjoining gardens that now house the Cathedral and St Mary's, Suffolk's biggest parish church. Why not visit Greene King brewery, Moyse's Hall Museum, The Theatre Royal or Suffolk's Regimental Museum. There is an Arts Cinema and a great music venue at The Apex; an award winning venue known for its acoustic excellence and hosts a diverse programme of live music and events from classical, pop, rock, jazz, blues, world, country and folk, plus comedy and dance. The Theatre Royal is a restored Regency theatre. The building is one of eight Grade 1 listed theatres in the UK. It offers a diverse programme of drama, music and stand-up comedy.
Abbeygate Cinema is a 1920's modernised cinema showing a range of classic films and new releases. It has a bar and restaurant.
Cambridge is just a 40-minute drive from Bachelors Lodge and is one of the most beautiful cities in the country to visit with many sights to see including the stunning architecture of the university Colleges best seen from a tour in one of the many punts to be found on the River Cam or hire your own and enjoy a picnic on the famous ‘Backs' of the colleges. The University City was founded in 1209 and is home to 120 Nobel prize winners, Charles Darwin and Stephen Hawking to name but two of them! There is a wealth of music, shows, drama to be seen and an abundance of art from classic to contemporary. The city is awash with fabulous Museums including Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, Museum of Classical Archaeology, Cambridge University Botanic Garden, The Fitz William Museum, Kettles Yard, The Polar Museum, Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences, Whipple Museum of History of Science and Museum of Zoology. Amazing and all free admission!
Saffron Hall is a 30-minute drive away and is a critically acclaimed centre for its acoustic and state of the art facilities. It surpasses many of the world's more established venues. Artists including The London Philharmonic Orchestra, Maxim Vengerou, and Penguin Cafe have performed on stage. Audley End House hosts concerts for a wide range of genre. Set in grounds designed by Capability Brown the natural amphitheatre is surrounded by stunning rolling hills.
