Really enjoyed our stay. Stunning scenery. Host was great and accommodating. Close to Clifden for groceries and the castle for a pub lunch! We had lovely cycles on the greenway but there is a small amount of cycling on the quiet road so might not be suitable for very young children. It would have been handy to have a clothes dryer but apart from that we had everything we needed.
My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We went walking on the grounds of Ballynahinch Castle, walked to the castle for tea, and drove to several local beaches. It was a great space for kids and we were able to cook and do laundry easily while we were there. I would recommend it for families.
Ballynahinch, Co Galway.
Ballinahinch is located in Connemara, County Galway, on the N59 Clifden to Galway road. The Ballynahinch estate dates back to the 16th century, when it was owned by the O'Flaherty family. In the 18th century, the estate was purchased by the Martin family, who built the current castle in the early 19th century.
The estate was later purchased by Richard Berridge, a wealthy Englishman, who restored the castle and developed the estate into a sporting estate, with fishing and hunting being major attractions. The estate continued to be owned by the Berridge family until the 1920s, when it was sold to the Irish Land Commission. The castle and estate were then sold to a number of private owners over the years, before being purchased by the current owners in the 1980s.
Today, the Ballinahinch Estate and surrounds are a popular tourist destination, offering visitors the chance to enjoy activities such as fishing, hiking, and shooting as well as having the benefit of many woodland walks and trails and access on to the Connemara Greenway. The estate is also home to several rare and endangered species, including the red squirrel and the pine marten.
The nearby town of Clifden has a vibrant cultural scene, with many festivals and events throughout the year, including the Clifden Arts Festival and the Connemara Pony Show.
