Staying in a Strawbale home is a special experience! The thick adobe walls create a cozy and warm feeling that a traditional stick built home just can’t. Enjoy the vaulted ceilings, heated floors, new appliances and natural sunlight. Backyard, fire pit and gas grill as well as outdoor eating space. The view from the kitchen looks out on a private pond and local historic (retired) Rio Grande Railroad bridge. Some scenes from the movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were shot by this bridge! The 16 inch stucco strawbale walls keep the house temperature consistent—cool enough in the summer that we’ve never found the need for an air conditioner in that home, and nice and cozy in the winter. You can accommodate a third person on the couch in the living room. The couch has a back that drops down and turns into a larger, flat sleeping space. There is a foam pad stored near the laundry that you can put on top of the couch to make a cozier and an extra set of linens. This sleeping space would be most appropriate for a smaller adult or a child. The strawbale is one of 3 homes on a 7 acre parcel of land that backs up to the Florida River. You can walk a short walk down to the river. Your hosts are in the main ranch house and there is another studio Airbnb next door to the Strawbale (on the other side of the fenced back door). This property is located on the east side of Durango, just outside city limits—8 min drive to your closest coffee shop, 18 minutes to downtown.
