Quinta Velha, meaning “old farm”, lies in a private forest between Sintra’s old town and the historic monuments perched on the mountain top. In 2020 a significant multi-year renovation project was completed, converting the old stables and summer residence into a modern private family home, deeply respecting all existing historic features. A century old chapel with unique panels of traditional hand-painted tiles and fountain add to the beauty of the natural setting. Close to a large family home, an old stone-baking oven ruin and service quarters were converted into a cosy one-bedroom home, comprising a double bedroom with en-suite bathroom, a living room and a kitchenette. We also offer a delicious breakfast and a base from which to explore history and nature. Eggs, for breakfast, are collected daily from our own chickens and ducks. A tasty home-made dinner can be served upon request - our specialties include Portuguese, French and Moroccan cuisine. The property's forest extends all the way up to the Pena palace.
Ines, her family and her home staff are all unbelievably kind and helpful. We immediately felt like family. The property itself is truly out of a fairy tale, overlooking The Moorish Castle and Pena Palace on the mountain top and the City of Sintra below. We loved walking everywhere and with this location we never had to get a taxi or tuktuk. YMMV We cannot recommend this place enough. It is a true piece of paradise.
This place was magical. The views from the patio at breakfast were of the Moorish castle and beautiful forests. From the host’s garden you can see the Royal Palace and all of Sintra, magnificent sights. We hiked straight from the airbnb to both palace and castle, which was amazing. The cottage was peaceful, quiet, and well appointed with beautiful linens and fresh flowers. The host family is right next door and generously shares a magnificent patio. We felt safe and like we were truly experiencing living in this fairy tale place. Ines and her young family are lovely and charming. They all speak English perfectly. We greatly appreciated all of Ines’ wonderful tips about restaurants, beaches, and towns in Portugal. She was so helpful and informative. Ines and her husband are charitable and active in developing children’s schools, and it was a treat to see one of them. We also appreciated their housekeeper’s kindness, help, and delicious breakfast. We had a wonderful stay.
A little piece of paradise. We are looking for some downtime and we got it! Such a tranquil beautiful setting. The birds chirping with your morning coffee on the huge terrace with a view of the castle. The breakfast was amazing and the family was wonderful. Magic!
Ines' place is unique. In Wales or Scotland we'd call it a bothy, and it provided an ideal location from which to explore wonderful Sintra, in rain and shine. The addition of a lovely breakfast each morning was unexpected but very welcome. From here the delights of Sintra can be explored easily on foot, the many houses, palaces, their gardens etc. We had bicycles with us, and the location is ideal for rides to Cascais along the coast.
The Quinta Velha farm is walking distance from the Sintra historic centre (in the valley) and the Moorish Castle and Pena Palace (perched on the mountain top).
If you are moving by car, a great part of the historic centre is a one-way system. Once in the centre, there is public parking available, for a small hourly fee. Access to Quinta Velha is restricted, so please always keep your reservation in your smartphone to access the road that leads to our house. Once at Quinta Velha, you will have a parking space. As you exit our gate by car you can either go up or down (very few cars go down as we are in a protected area with only a few local residents). If you choose to drive down during core hours of the day local tourist drivers going up towards the Castle and Palace may suggest you need to turn around. Please know this is not the case since residents are allowed to go down - you just need to drive down carefully as the road is narrow and most cars are driving up. It is a 2-way road from our gate downwards.
I would be happy to answer any questions you may have. Please also note there is a tourist bus, that covers a whole circuit of monuments, that stops just next to our gate.
