Ambatenna estate, about fifty years ago, was a tea plantation of about 100 acres with a traditional tea processing factory. This area was later blocked out and sold to persons, who were interested in living close to City of Bandarawela. Even now in residential blocks, there appears unmanaged tea bushes, taking back their natural forms as tea-trees. Similarly, garden of Ambatenna bungalow, too retains one tea-tree reminiscing past glory of Ambatenna tea-plantation.
Since the living in Ambatenna Estate, residents became united community as a welfare Society named ‘Ambatenna Gardens’. Surviving tea factory, the symbol of ancestral Ambatenna Estate, continues its century old custom of processing green tea leaf into made tea. However, with reduced Greenleaf inputs from Ambatenna Estate, the factory serves surrounding small tea famers as a bought-leaf tea factory. Lower elevations of the Ambatenna Estate, joins Indikambedda village, where peasant agricultural farming community lives in harmony with residents of Ambatenna Estate.
Ambatenna Estate, during its tea planting days, had gravel roads used by the vehicle for the mobility of the Superintendent of Ambatenna Estate. Those roads were even adequate for the motorcycle of the assistant superintendent, supervising ‘kanganis’, as they were called, women engaged in tea plucking, men involved in tea growing for their walking by feet between the factory and the plantation.
The gravel road network within the estate has now been developed as a concreated road layout confined to the estate. Tail-ends of estate roads lead to walkways of the village community of Indikambedda, most of whom had bicycles. Motor cars and car parks were beyond the reach of villages.
