Gravesend has the world's oldest surviving cast iron pier, built in 1834. It is a unique structure having the first known iron cylinders used in its construction. The pier was completely refurbished in 2004 and now features a bar and restaurant; with public access to the pier head when the premises are open,In fact, one of the earliest records of the town is in the Domesday Survey of 1086, where it was called Gravesham. Later, during the Middle Ages, it was a known interchangeably as Gravesend or Gravesham. Thus, the name has a very firm base in history.
Many historians are also of the belief that Gravesend was given its name after the spread of the bubonic plague in 1665, which killed around 100,000 Londoners. It has been suggested the dead were then buried in Gravesend. On Gravesend Road they passed a house called Gad's Hill Place. Young Charles was impressed and bought the house in 1856. In this house he wrote his last four Novels, including Great Expectations and A Tale of Two Cities
