The Urca neighborhood, located in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro, is one of the most charming, traditional, and striking places in the city. In addition to the lush landscape of Guanabara Bay, the location has a rich history, with an emblematic past, completely related to the history of Brazil.

The Urca neighborhood was built on landfills in the middle of the first half of the 20th century. However, its history began much earlier, when the waters of Guanabara Bay only encountered the rocky structures located around Pão de Açúcar and Urca.
The region, which served as a military base for the Portuguese and was part of the entire context of numerous conflicts between the Portuguese, French, and Indians, only took on the form we know it today in 1870. At that time, a Portuguese trader named Domingos Fernandes Pinto planned to transform the place into a new city with buildings with more artistic characteristics.
He also intended to create a bridge over the landfill, connecting the old Praia da Saudade – today Avenida Pasteur, to Forte São João. However, the army embargoed the work with the justification that access to the military area would be facilitated and the merchant was unable to complete the path on that occasion. But in 1921 the path was built by Sociedade Anônima Empresa da Urca. Soon afterwards the pier was built and in 1923 the first buildings were erected.
Over time, the neighborhood's infrastructure was built with a vision of the future, integrating luxurious residences with the exuberant natural beauty that surrounds it. In addition to the city's elite, Urca began to attract an emerging community of artists, intellectuals, and influential people, who saw the neighborhood as a source of inspiration and a refuge. Soon, cultural life began to develop, with arts halls and cultural events.
It was from this mixture that Urca began to consolidate its identity. It was the basis for becoming what it is today: one of the most elegant and revered neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro.
