we had a lovely stay at Elizabeth's place on a work / family trip. everything was as described and the location is perfect.
We used to stay in Port Charlotte every year as the kids were growing up until they went to University. After a four year gap tis is the fist time we have all been back together. It did not disappoint.
Port Charlotte is one of the prettiest villages on Islay with its whitewashed stone-built houses, pier and sandy beach. It boasts two hotels, a Natural History Centre and the Museum of Islay Life. The village has its own post office/shop with petrol pump where you can buy a good selection of groceries. There is a playground for young chlldren at the Port Mor Centre nearby. Easting out is possible at the Lochindaal and Port Charlotte Hotels, the Lochindaal Seafood Kitchen, and at the Port Mor Centre. Port Charlotte is also an excellent hub for exploring Islay, with west coast atlantic beaches within easy driving distance and wonderful coastal walks. Birdwatchers can visit the RSPB centre situated on the estuary of Loch Gruniart and can be given guided tours.
Islay is renowned for its many malt whisky distilleries. The nearest to Port Charlotte is in Bruichladdich, where visitors are welcomed. A little further away is the Kilchoman distillery, close to the dunes and golden sands of Machir Bay and the old Kilchoman cemetery with its ancient Celtic Cross and gravestones.
It's simplest to get around by car, although cyclists can reach most places on the island fairly easily. There are bus services to Bowmore (Islay's largest town with an excellent butcher and well -stocked Co-op supermarket ) and to the ferry terminals at Port Ellen and Port Asking. If brining a car from the mainland, you must make advance bookings with Calmac Ferries, which sail from Kennacraig terminal (near Tarbert) to Islay. Sailings also from Oban (twice a week) Car hire is available on the island. Logan air flies twice daily to Islay Glenegadale airport Glasgow.
