As the name suggests, it is one of the island's original coastguard's cottages, renovated to a high standard with stunning sea views. The Holiday cottage is accessibility friendly as on the ground floor the lounge, dining area and kitchen is open planned. The master bedroom also on the ground floor has an en-suite wet room. In the 7th Century St Aiden, an Irish missionary founded the first monastery in AD 635 to convert the northern Anglo-Saxons from paganism to Christianity. Holy Island as it came to be known was a renowned centre of Christian life and learning where many treasures, including the Lindisfarne Gospels were created by the monks. In the 670's Lindisfarne was home to one of the most famous monk-bishops; Cuthbert. After his death his body was enshrined before the high altar of the church and Lindisfarne became one of the most important pilgrimage centres in the north. In 793 Vikings raiders began a series of attacks on the monastery that eventually forced the monks to flee to the safety of the mainland taking St Cuthbert's relics with them.
