There is a large selection of pubs offering live music, good food or a quiet drink, quaint antique and gift shops, and famous fish and chip shops nestled amongst the cobbled back streets and main shopping areas. The local tour bus is an excellent way of visiting some of Whitby’s highlights, including the stunning abbey and St Mary’s Church, positioned on the cliff top where you can enjoy spectacular views over Whitby and out to sea. There are many pretty resorts dotted along the coast, including Sandsend, Runswick Bay, Staithes and Robin Hood’s Bay, which are great for exploring our maritime history, including Captain James Cook, smugglers and pirates. There are water sports, surf schools and even whale watching trips to be found along the coast. The North York Moors National Park and surrounding area is a haven for walkers and cyclists, and many walks can be accessed from your doorstep, including the Cleveland Way, a riverside walk along the River Esk and a lovely coastal walk along the Cinder Track between Whitby and Scarborough, via Robin Hood’s Bay. Travel by steam train into the heart of ’Heartbeat’ country, or take a fishing trip out to sea on one of the many boat trips that leave the harbour. Falling Foss Waterfall, Roseberry Topping and Sutton Bank are just some of the natural beauty attractions in the area, whilst the medieval walled city of York is just an hour’s drive or train ride away with its National Railway Museum and Jorvik Viking Centre, or just explore the medieval cobbled shopping area.
