The pretty village of Portesham is sheltered beneath Blackdown Hill. The Hardy Monument, a memorial to Admiral Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy, is a popular viewpoint above the village and provides almost 360 degree views.
In nearby Abbotsbury there are a number of visitor attractions such as the Swannery, the Children's Farm and the award winning Subtropical Gardens. Abbotsbury Swannery provides the unique experience of feeding swans and in May and June admiring the newborn cygnets. At the Children's Farm little ones can enjoy cuddling guinea pigs, pony riding, goat racing and playing in the pirate ship.
To the east is the popular seaside town of Weymouth with its Georgian seafront and 17th century harbour. If you're bringing the little ones, Weymouth Sea Life Adventure Park gives them the chance to be a pirate or a mermaid for the day, while they learn about the magical creatures off the southern coast.
The Jurassic Coast is world-famous as one of the best places to find fossils and evidence of the prehistoric past. There are plenty of fascinating finds on display at the Lyme Regis Museum. If you'd prefer to hunt for your own fossils, you can take a guided walk along the coastline.
Other must-see sights along this unique coastline include Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove. Both of these fascinating and photogenic features have been carved out by the sea over millions of years. If you'd like to add some adrenaline to your experience of the great outdoors, coasteering is guaranteed to get the heart pumping.
Further west is the bustling market town of Bridport and the colourful, pretty town of Lyme Regis, with gentle waters for bathing, ideal for children.
The county town of Dorchester is only a 20 minute drive away with its large selection of shops, restaurants, cafes, museums and two cinemas.
