Our flight got n at 6 pm and by the time we got our vehicle & arrived at the place it was 8 pm. We were happy 2 arrive and once we walked in , we notice the place was not clean. Open baby food jar, left on the kitchen counter with a corner of a pop tart. Dirty dishes in the sink and the dishwasher. Beds unmade, towels on the floor in the bathroom, paper on the floor, trash on the tables. trash in the living room. Jovanny was notified and stated that his cleaning lady went to the hospital before she could clean the place. My guys did clean up the place to make it presentable, but I had already accepted Jovanny's offer. He had another place that we could stay at which was only 7 miles down the road He stated that it cost a little more, but he didn't charge me anymore. The new place was at Club Hemmingway, a penthouse in a resort. It was nice, but I actually preferred the first place better. in the new place, the A/C's leaked in 2 of the bedrooms. Tv's didn't work and bad remotes

For those of you who don't want to read a lengthy review, I'll summarize by saying that this is a fantastic place to stay, from every perspective. Details follow. . I was a little apprehensive when I booked this apartment because there was only one review and it was a very brief: “terrible experience”. But the apartment looked so nice in the photos that I decided to contact the owner, Jovanny, who is an Airbnb “superhost” and advertises other properties that are well rated. After a conversation with Jovanny, I felt confident that the experience would be a pleasant one and I was right. I’m glad that I decided to ignore that review and stay in this apartment. This review is long so that potential guests can get an accurate idea of what to expect. . A little about me: I am a very experienced traveler and, as you can see from my profile, I have stayed at many Airbnb properties. I extensively plan my trips and have rather high expectations of Airbnb hosts (i.e. that they deliver what they promise and communicate well). . APARTMENT: what you see in the photos is what you get. Nice furniture, comfortable sitting and sleeping. Walls and surfaces are neither cluttered nor sparse (i.e. there’s enough decoration to feel like a home). There’s a huge TV in the living room with cable, including Netflix. Two of the three bedrooms also have a TV. The place was sparking clean and well equipped (i.e. there was nothing that I wanted but could not find). The balcony is exactly as depicted; I spent quite a bit of time on it enjoying the views and the sea breeze. As an added bonus, the water in the showers actually gets HOT. YAY! During my experiences at other locations in the DR, there are chronic issues with hot water; you’re lucky if you get lukewarm water, so this was a welcome treat. HOST and CHECK IN: Jovanny was very responsive both before our stay and during it. He arranged for a woman to come daily, prepare breakfast and clean (i.e. at an extra charge of about $33 per day and we provided all groceries). She was friendly and efficient; she prepared everything to our liking. There was a minor technical issue during our stay and response time was very quick. Check in was a breeze. He acquired all of the necessary details before arrival and communicated them to reception, which enabled us to simply provide a name to the concierge and receive a key. There were porters in the lobby, with shopping carts, who helped us to schlep everything up to the apartment. . BUILDING and LOCATION: Spectacular! Beautiful and clean building with every amenity you could ask for. The pool and gym look exactly like the photos. I enjoyed sitting in the shade at the bar next to the pool, sipping mojitos. The beach just outside the perimeter wall is very nice. 300 meters to the right, also alongside the beach, is Café del Sol. They have covered beds and lounges that you may use for the entire day in exchange for a minimum consumption. They also have a covered bar area with tables that may be used with no minimum. We were a group of 5 and we loved our covered bed which was just at the edge of the water. The café is only open Friday through Sunday and be sure to contact them a week in advance to reserve a bed. Do NOT order the paella unless you don’t mind waiting more than an hour for it. If you reserve a bed (cama) at Café del Sol, head over there when they open at 9:30 to choose the one you like best; then you can go back to the condo, have your breakfast and return to the Café del Sol at your convenience. Like almost all beaches in the Caribbean, there is some sargassum, but it is not excessive and both the property and Café del Sol rake their beaches, so there really is no issue. Juan Dolio is a small community; the main beach is very pretty and not overly crowded, not even on Sunday. There are plenty of restaurants and bars to choose from. We enjoyed our evening meals at Paladart (good) and Sal Marina (very good but ask the waiter what they don’t have before you try to choose something from their menu). Uber is useless here. Ask the concierge in the lobby to call a taxi for you. Expect to pay the equivalent of US$10 for a trip into town. Once we were in town, we searched for and found a taxi driver we liked and used him exclusively (i.e. called him to order his services) for between DOP400 and DOP500 per trip. . ACTIVITIES: Not much at Juan Dolio. As I mentioned there are plenty of places to eat and drink but water activities here are limited. You can ride a horse along the beach but most water activities are elsewhere. Jet ski is available in Boca Chica every day except Sunday. Trips to Catalina and/or Saona islands (for beaches, fishing and/or diving) may be found in and around La Romana. Buggy rides and parasailing are only available in Bavaro (about 2 hours distant); we used Xtreme-buggy.com and can heartily recommend them. It was a fantastic experience. Altos de Chavon is a beautiful replica of a Spanish village located high above the river Chavon. It’s about a 45 minute ride and well worth visiting. . APARTMENT TIPS: hire the maid to prepare your breakfasts and clean up daily (see above under host). There is a switch that looks like a light switch in the hallway to the bedrooms; along the left hand wall, there is a bathroom and then a couple of doors to the right of it. The switch is to the right of these doors; make sure that switch glows red, meaning that the hot water heater is
