A very friendly group, catering for everything. Steffi was a great host. Diving was great and a relaxing time. Thanks
BE WARNED! This may have been a nice place pre-COVID at their original location, but things are not nearly as nice any more… Accommodation - the Bure itself is basic and reasonably clean (we did have to remove some fungi from the shower head ourselves, but ok this is the tropics). We did have some issues with a nightly rat resting in the roof of the Bure as there is a large gap between the inner bamboo roofing and the top roof. Location - they used to be on a nice, white sandy private beach right in front of the reef but had to move to a new location at the end of Viani bay (pictures are still from the old place!). There is no beach here and snorkeling from the shore is subpar in murky waters. It’s very isolated so apart from bushwalking there is not much to do. Value for money - FJD 100 per night for the Bure may appear cheap, but…keep in mind that there are a number of compulsory additional costs: FJD 60 per person each way for the compulsory boat transfer (the only way to get there) and FJD 70 per person per night for the meal plan (food prepared by the local Fijians is nice). The main activities of course cost extra, FJD 90 per person for snorkeling with the boat, FJD 165 per person for a one tank dive and FJD 270 for a two tank dive (with slightly discounted rates for repeat dives). They have a reasonable boat for the activities, but the dive gear is dated. Keep in mind that they charge an extra FJD 45 for the diving gear, which they do not out on the original quote but suddenly appears when checking out. Also, there is a hefty 4.5% card fee on top of the total bill (card fees are not unusual in Fiji, but typically more between 2-3%). Experience - the local Fiji staff in the kitchen, the boat captain and our snorkeling / diving guide were amazing! Super friendly, skillful and they know the best places in the area. They will go out of their way to give you the real Fiji experience. Unfortunately this cannot be said of the Swiss / German couple running the place (Viola is not on site any longer due to health issues), hospitality doesn’t seem to be their thing so you are welcome to stay and pay but don’t expect the Fijian friendliness. Safety - Unfortunately this has been the only place in Fiji where we did not feel safe, and not because of the locals but because of our fellow Europeans runnings the shop here… when we arrived my partner was scratched and bitten by their dog, which was dismissed as “ow she is just a bit playful”. When checking out they confronted us with many extra charges and pressured us to pay. It was not a nice setting especially because you are so remote and depend on them for your return journey (even worse they initially made someone of the local Fiji staff handle this, who had to sell it to us with a smile and was understandably extremely uncomfortable with the whole situation. They only stepped in when I asked them directly why they had provided a different quotation to us initially).
If you want to dive the Rainbow Reef, and love the peace and quiet of nature, there is no better place to stay than Dolphin Bay Dive Retreat! Super secluded and closest to the reef, the location is the best for diving with the experts in the area. They can take you to see things unique here and not found anywhere else! My room was just the right size, the sheets soft, and plenty of hot water. Meals there were tasty and made with local ingredients. I have never slept so well! Best of all was meeting the people here - big hearts and so helpful. This place is truly a gem in Fiji, especially if you are a diver.
We stayed for 5 days and we had a great time there. The staff is outstanding, so nice all the time and very kind. The scuba diving is great, close to all diving spots and the crew is very professional. If you go there for diving, this is a great address. The massages are also very good, don’t miss one! The area is nice, as well as the sunsets at the top of the hill and the dinners all together in front of the sea. I stayed in a couple tents, those could be refreshed a bit, as they are quite old now. Showers and bathrooms would also need a remodeling.
