UNDISCOVERED PARADISE!
El Cuyo is an authentic fishing village with virgin beaches and stunning emerald waters. It's only 2 hours and 15 minutes from Cancun but so far it has remained relatively undiscovered and undeveloped. So if you'd prefer to relax on an empty beach, where the locals are friendly and the fish is fresh - rather than hanging out with the hoards in Quintana Roo, El Cuyo is the place for you!
DAY TRIPS:
El Cuyo is also perfectly placed for day trips to Isla Holbox, the pink lagoons of Las Colorada and the ruins of Ek Balam. Chichen Itza is also feasible within a day. (Please note that whilst there are limited tour providers, so a rental car makes these trips far more cost effective and easier)
NATURE:
El Cuyo is part of the nature reserve of Ria Lagartos and the wildlife is abundant. Your neighbours are turtles, pelican, flamingos and iguanas, and if you're lucky you'll get to spot a dolphin or giant manta from the beach! There are also 250 different species of birds in the lagoon area.
WATERSPORTS:
If you want a little more action, you can try kiteboarding. El Cuyo has been featured in numerous international kiting magazines and is quickly becoming known as a hot new kiting destination. There are various schools in the town.
For those who don't kite, the breeze - which usually picks up around lunchtime - serves to keep the heat bearable! Usually in the mornings, there's no wind and the sea is perfectly calm so it's great for paddleboarding or canoeing/kayaking. Extreme Control Sport rents SUPs.
When the sea is really calm and visibility is clear (usually in the summer months) snorkelling is possible and there are a couple of interesting spots nearby.
EL CUYO FACILITIES:
As El Cuyo is a fishing village and a beach & nature haven, it does not have all the facilities of a modern tourist resort.
It does have the basics - small grocery shops, clinic and gas station are all within walking distance to the property - but if you want to enjoy some of the 'finer' things during your stay, we recommend a trip to the supermarket before you come (we provide drinking water).
Note however that there are restaurants, snack food places, pizzerias and cafes in El Cuyo. Some close for low season - September and October
NEED TO KNOW!
There is no ATM and very few places accept credit cards or dollars - please bring enough cash in pesos for the duration of your stay.
The nearest town to El Cuyo which has ATMs, supermarkets etc, is Tizimin - which is just over an hour away by car.
EL CUYO BEACHES:
The sea and beach are perfect for bathers including children, with fine sandy, slowly sloping shores and clear warm water. Very rarely a northerly wind may bring seaweed to the coastline but normally within 24 hours it is swept away.
BEACHFRONT VILLA LOCATION
The house is on the sand avenue stretching to west side of town looking out onto the main kitesurf beach and only 5 minutes walk to the centre of town.

Once you're here, getting around El Cuyo is easy on foot - everything is pretty close.
There's also a local moto-taxi that costs around $10 pesos per person to go anywhere in town.
During your stay, if you want to explore a bit more, you can hire bikes, golf buggies or quads, but if you're planning to do a trip to Rio Lagartos, Las Coloradas or Ek Balam, a car makes it much much easier.
