We had an amazing week here. A big thanks to Vuhile for so much effort - he arranged fresh crayfish and mussels for us to buy, caught us a beautiful musselcracker fish that we could braai, took us (and tried to teach us) fishing, showed us some amazing waterfalls and local hiking spots. This place is dreamy. It is a hectic hike up to the house, but it is totally worth it with an unforgettable view. And Vuhile arranges as many porters as it takes to take all your stuff up. So you just need to get yourself there at your own pace. We will definitely be back.

This is an amazing place and view! The walk is really tough specially if you want to go up and down to the sea. But the place is really amazing and the view is to die for!! Vuyile that hosted us was a Super Star!!

Zebra base camp is paradise! It has uninterrupted views of the beautiful wild coast. Perfect spot for running along the beach, surfing, fishing and just relaxing watching the dolphins play in the surf. The walk to the cottage was definitely worth it and made for the whole experience. The cottage and its furnishings are extremely well thought out and you can't want for more. The delicious collected rain water is pure heaven and the solar powered everything we needed! Vuhele was an incredible host who shared knowledge about the area and helped us out at any opportunity. He even sorted out crayfish and baked us tasty bread. We will definitely be back!

We had the holiday of a lifetime! Thanks Chris for sharing this special place with us. The house had everything we needed. Comfy beds and soft blankets. Hot water and no load-shedding!! But the location - oh wow!!!. Having an entire beach to ourselves was the ultimate luxury. The Transkei has the most beautiful coastline and the warmest sea - it was impossible to get out of the water. We are an active family and there were a lot to do - swimming, fishing, snorkeling, long walks, and cooking all the seafood caught or bought from local fisherman 🐠 Vuyele, who looks after the house, became a friend. He is a star and just an awesome guy. This little house on the hill is a magic place and we hope to spend many more holidays there! PS. Recommend going for a very early morning swim when the sun rises over the ocean - heavenly 🌞🌊

This is one of the most legendary cottages on the wild coast. So legendary at such a good value that we want to keep it a secret. This place, host, and property manager Vuhile deserves high remarks. It it the most comfortable off-grid stay I’ve ever had. High water pressure, hot water, bathtub, separate shower, two bathrooms, banana trees, plenty of blankets, gas stove that boils water incredibly fast, and plenty of space for refrigerated and frozen food. Kitchen is fully equipped, including a French press. There is a library of books and many vintage copies of National Geographic that are interesting reading material. The best entertainment was the spectacular view. We love to hike and surf but it was hard to leave our chairs admiring the view of the coast line, waves, bulls, goats, and donkeys go by. Each morning we woke up to the red glow of dawn and sat outside with tea to watch the sunrise. We saw dolphins and bats flying every morning. When there are waves the dolphins put on a show. We felt safe here and even slept with the windows open to hear the waves. It is also warmer staying at this cottage at the top of the hill than staying in town. We had dreamy weather the entire time. One day there was a short beautiful thunderstorm. Incredible to watch it roll through from a high vantage point. Naturally, there was a rainbow at the end of it. Like the other reviews say, you need to be fit to climb the hill to the cottage, but it’s well worth the effort to get to paradise. It certainly made us more fit by the time we left! The host organizes porters to carry everything you have to the cottage (including surfboards). We ended up not having to carry anything. There are two secure options to park your car. 1) at the lodge for 20R per day or at the top of the hill where you meet the porters for 30R per day. We chose #2 because we came in a citi golf and the road was a bit rough to the top of the hill without at 4x4 and you can actually see your vehicle from the cottage. The property manager Vuhile is an incredible human being that helped us with so much: organized fresh crayfish and helped us clean them, washed clothes, freshly made Goza bread made over a fire by his sister and another loaf steamed by him, brought us eggs and onions from town, cleaned the house, told stories, made us laugh, and had a fire made for us when we got back from surfing. He is so kind, considerate, and enhanced our stay in many ways. Next time we come he offered to have bread and crayfish ready for us when we arrive! He lives close by and is very accessible. A surprising perk: we both had cell service and data at this cottage. The other cottage we stayed at Mboyti did not have it. However it will be easy to forget about your phone staying here. Speaking of tech, when the solar runs low, the system will beep. To turn this off there is a switch underneath on the bottom right. Recommend doing this before you go to bed. This is not just a place to stay. It is a special experience. Thank you Chris for our best Airbnb experience, sharing your story, your incredible generosity, and building our dream cottage!
