Here some suggestions to do at the farm. 1.Tour to the petroglifos and Ceiba tree with a guide from the community. The "petroglifos" are several rock with forms and marks done in the prehispanic period by the indigenous. Also he will show you the Ceiba tree located in the middle of the farm, the biggest tree around. Tour cost: 10,000 colones for a group or ¢2.500 colones p/p. This tour needs to be programmed a week in advance. 2.Tour to the Convento trail or to “La Perica” waterfall with Juan Carlos. Juan Carlos is a very interesting young man who works taking care of the Wild Refuge from Longo maï and has a great knowledge of the tropical forest and spices. The tour to the Convento trail takes you to the closest forest and the river, this is great to do and will show you how to get to the river and trail that you can also do by your self later. This tour cost is 6,000 colones for the group, and can be organised directly at the farm. 3.Doña Zulma can teach you make chocolate from the plant of Cacao and Doña Edith will teach traditional kitchen. 4.If you want to see the upper part of the farm you may want to ride a horse. The cost of the tour is 10,000 colones for the group plus 6,000 colones for each horse. The horses are mellow but no security equipment is provided. Juan Carlos can take you see the coffee and sugar cane plantations. 4.For cooking lessons visit doña Edith, she can show you how to process the corn to do tortillas and pupusas, with her you can also learn to do rice, beans or delicious picadillos!
The house is located just at the entrance of the Longo Maï Wildlife Refuge, a 453-hectare nature reserve and is very close to the center of the little town with access to 2 small local shops to get basic food (if you want more sophisticated products you must buy them at the nearest city), and on the other side everything is forest, rivers, places to walk easily accessible. The neighborhood is small, the human contact is easy and the families are welcoming.
You can get here in an auto or by bus.
The cheapest way to get from the San José airport into the city center is to take a Tuasa bus. In town, it is hard to understand the public transportation system so we recommend a taxi. If you want to stay overnight in San José, try the Casa Ridgway, the Tranquilo Backpackers Hostel or the Costa Rica Backpackers Hostel.
From San José to Longo Mai you can get without changing buses, the trip with a Tracopa bus takes about 3.5 to 4 hours. As of 2010, cheap buses leave San José at 5:00 AM, 6:00 AM, 7:00 AM, 8:15 AM, 8:30 AM, 10:00 AM, 1:00 PM, 2:30 PM, 4:00 PM and 6:30 PM. After about three hours you get into San Isidro de El General, from there the bus takes about 45 more minutes to Longo Mai. If you don't know the route, ask the driver to stop in Longo Mai.
From the Longo Mai bus stop, a gravel road takes you about one mile up the hill into the village. You can ask for a shuttle, the residents around the bus stop and Edith's family (Tel. 8330 6118) charge about 2000-3000 colones for that (in 2010). If you call early, a pick-up service by horse is another possibility.
