My name is Julie Hill and I have been a tenant farmer of Carcant estate since November 2005. The estate is a traditionally run sheep farm and because of the steep & rugged terrain we use good working dogs to assist with everyday farm work. Without these dogs it would be impossible to manage sheep. I have been shepherding for nearly 40 years starting in East Anglia where my passion for the working border collie started me on the path to understanding the language of the dog. My move to Scotland took me and my sheepdogs to some of the remotest, most rugged hill terrain in the UK where, as the sole shepherd, I single-handedly tended 1000 sheep grazing over 8000 acres. This experience showed me the critical importance of having exceptionally good working sheepdogs and the limits of endurance both the shepherd and dog have to achieve in order to cope with everyday shepherding tasks. After studying my pack of dogs I developed a unique understanding of canine communication and have travelled the world teaching both individuals and groups how to use the “pressure/release” methods that I developed & use on my own border collies. Nature, conservation and sheep welfare are the up most importance to us and so in order to protect the farm and the traditional way of life with Nethhillbordercollies I diversified in to teaching, demonstrations and recently Nethhill holiday let.
