La Laja · 整套民居 · 2室3床1.0卫 · 可住4人 · Rural retreat in the beautiful La Laja gorge
Situated in the verdant barranco of La Laja, the house is ideally placed to access various hiking routes to the stunning volcanic formations of Los Roques and the famous Garajonay National Park, yet is only a 20 minute drive from the capital, San Sebastian. It provides an oasis of tranquility for walkers, those wishing to study the local geology, flora and fauna, or merely recharge their batteries in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Ideal for couples, friends and families. The property is an authentic, licensed Gomeran casa rural, sympathetically modernised to provide spacious, comfortable accommodation for up to 4 guests, while retaining traditional, Canarian architectural features such as a horno (bread oven), wooden shutters and exposed stonework. Its thick, stone walls ensure that it is kept cool in Summer and cosy in Winter. In addition, the house benefits from secure, private gardens with fruit trees, grape vines and seating areas to both front and rear. To the front of the house, there is a spacious, open-plan living/dining space with comfortable seating, television, DVD player and a well-stocked library of English language books and DVDs. Adjacent, is a restful sleeping area with quality, queen size bed and generous storage space. If required, the sleeping area can be screened off at night for additional privacy. Opening off this bedroom space is a charming breakfasting/sun room with views to the garden and barranco beyond, ideal for relaxing and taking in the natural beauty of the landscape. The second bedroom has twin beds, ample storage space and a dressing table/work station with swivel chair. All windows have wooden shutters to allow for a restful night's sleep and there is WiFi throughout the property. At the back of the house, there is a well-laid out kitchen, featuring the original horno, and equipped with a gas oven and hob, microwave oven and grill, and electric kettle, toaster and juicer. The shower room is also located in this part of the house and is well-supplied with fresh towels and complimentary toiletries. Between the kitchen and the bathroom, there is a utility area with washing machine, 'fridge-freezer, laundry and cleaning equipment. The back garden may be accessed from here. Heating, when needed, is provided by electric heaters and there is a fan for use on warmer, Summer nights. For guests travelling with infants, we can provide the full range of baby equipment listed under "Family Amenities", as well as a lightweight baby buggy, with sunshade, suitable from birth. The best thing about this place is the rural settlement of La Laja itself. It has an undeniable charm. Nested on the sides of the gorge with views of the the surrounding mountains and several treking routes just at hand. The road ends up in just a few hundred meters from here up the hill. And from there on there’s just a steep climb up on the mountainsides. We used the house as a base for a few trips into the mountains or car trips around the beautiful La Gomera (via San Sebastian - just about 15 minutes ride away). Very decent accommodation in a house just for our family of 4. Very clean, slightly darker place, which is perfectly okay in warm months. We enjoyed the nice little porch for dining. The kitchen was ready for all of the challenges we had prepared for it. Additionally there is all necessary children equipment you can need. It was a great pleasure to deal with the lovely and helpful hosts who were our immediate neighbours. Fully reccomended!
The picturesque hamlet of La Laja runs from the dams of Chejelipes to the road end, where tarmacadam gives way to pine-shaded hiking trails and on to the volcanic outcrops of Los Roques and Garajonay National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the unique Canarian cloud forest and the rich biodiversity it supports. The village clings to the steep, terraced sides of the barranco, and along the way, you can spot examples of Gomeran vernacular architecture and traditional buildings and field systems relating to the agricultural way of life the valley continues to support. If you are lucky, you may still hear El Silbo, the ancient Gomeran language, used as a means of transmitting the spoken word, over long distances, by whistling. Visitors to La Laja are struck by the greenness of their surroundings, the dramatic volcanic landscape and, most of all, by the restorative peacefulness of the setting.
There is a bus service to La Laja from San Sebastian, Monday-Saturday, but as this is very infrequent (07.00 & 13.00 from S/S and 07.30 & 13.30 from La Laja ), we would strongly recommend hiring a car. There are several companies on the island and we are happy to advise.
There is a good bus service from San Sebastian to other parts of the island, if you fancy a day without driving, and taxis are readily available in town.
