This place is the best when it comes to relaxation and silence. The bells at the monastery combined with the prayer flags and the beautiful pine forest makes it an ideal place for a spiritual as well as a romantic getaway. The host, Pasang Lama, is a kind-hearted and good person who is always ready to help. This house was built by a volunteer, namely, Peter, who has done a great job in making the perfect mountain wooden house. Important information: 1. The house is a bit above the monastery and requires a two-minute hike up. 2. The market is really far downhill and requires at least INR 800-1000 to go and come back. So we would recommend buying rations from the market before arriving. 3. Drinking water is spring water that comes from the hills. An electric kettle has been provided. Geyser is available. 4. Expect spiders in the house. 5. The toilet was a bit unclean when we arrived. Flush takes 2 hours to refill. 6. Ordering food could be a problem at times since the host has to correspond with a restaurant owner. Recommended to sort it out during the course of the day. 7. Free breakfast would only mean free milk. Eggs have to be purchased from the monastery kitchen. Recommended time to go: During full moon of every month, the host organises a community gathering where everyone sings prayers and have lunch together. Pasang Lama and Kunga Lama have been kind enough to include us in their teachings by translating the teachings after almost every line. Really thankful for that.
Peaceful, inspiring and clean… sacred place ! I could not imagine to find a such lovely place in Rimbik with one of the most amazing view of Himalayan mountain I never seen (from kitchen, bed, small roof and…even from toilets !). A so charming rustic and cosy wooden house, built with heart and many attentions (desk, shelves, coat hanger, well equipped kitchen, hot water bottle, etc.), well maintained and cleaned, where we can really relax and appreciate time passing differently. Actually, I enjoyed staying almost one month here in a kind of retreat (the guy before me, artist-musician, more than one year!), working little bit for the monastery as same time : the caretaker Lama, a such nicely human being, is used to welcome international volunteers for many years, buddhists and no-buddhists, who contribute to improve this special place, more than one century years old, with two temples, a new community hall, and a cute small museum (some cats and dogs as daily guests as well ;). Also it’s authentic mountain countryside here, we can appreciate this serene and quiet environment as supreme luxe, but same time we have to be open to power or water cut which actually happen sometimes but never last long. And once Lama is informed, he is very helpful to find any kind of solution if needed ! Also, because someone complained about lack of food : some few tea, sugar, rice and spices are nicely provided but for sure it’s not an homestay but a real private house and as it’s situated in an isolated area in mountain, there is no commodities around as restaurants or cafes (we can find some in Rimbik, 45 minutes by walk, but I never tried to adventure down there by night…). Therefore we have to bring our own food (Tuesday is market day in Rimbik), or exceptionally and if it’s anticipated, Lama can provide simple but healthy meal in exchange with donation. But so pleasant to cook “at home” with all tools needed ! Definitely, this is a highly respectful place, a kind of hidden paradise, that we feel grateful to discover in our life*** NB : and don't miss, by clear weather, wonderful sunrises from the Stupa, situated just few steps up.
I won't recommend this bnb to anyone. we were stuck in the house with no food or water(neither to drink nor in the bathroom). When we checked in nobody even asked if we needed anything. after check in some time later we realised that there was no water. after i called the caretaker he said manage for 1 night i will come tomorrow. we were left there without food or water. Only one silver lining that AirBnB refunded us for this booking and there support team did a fantastic job.
If you are peace loving person and all about those star filled night skies, then you have to visit this retreat. Pasang, the Iron Monk, is truly an inspirational being who will help you around with some interesting facts about the place and fill you up with great food and hospitality. You will also make a four- legged friend there named Jimmy, who will follow you everywhere! Samten Gompa is all about being in tune with nature and help in conserving the resources. Pasang, strongly believes in cleanliness and recycling waste to make the world a better place. Visiting this retreat itself is a challenge, but from up there, you can see the hills of Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet to some extent! The money you spend here, helps a good cause and goes into mainatance. You can volunteer here too.
